Congress flags 10-day delay in Lok Sabha prorogation

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh on August 23, 2026, called the 10-day delay in proroguing the Lok Sabha "abnormal." The House was adjourned sine die on August 13 according to the monsoon session schedule.

Ramesh asked whether the delay reflects government attempts to assemble the numbers required to clear a bill on delimitation. Prorogation formally ends a session and clears the legislative slate for the next one.

Under normal practice the government issues the prorogation order shortly after sine die adjournment. The extended interval has drawn opposition scrutiny in the absence of an official explanation.

Delimitation of parliamentary constituencies remains a politically sensitive process. Any move to advance related legislation would require careful management of numbers in the current House.

The monsoon session had already concluded its scheduled business. The opposition has used the procedural question to press for clarity on the government's legislative priorities for the remainder of the year.

No formal response from the government or the Speaker's office had been issued by Sunday evening. The issue is expected to surface again when Parliament next convenes.
