Jannik Sinner will not play again in 2026. The world number one said on Tuesday that he and his doctors had decided on a course of treatment for a knee injury, and that the season was over.
His last match was the Wimbledon final on 12 July, when he beat Alexander Zverev. He has missed the North American hard-court swing, the US Open, the Asian autumn swing, and now the European indoor circuit and the ATP Finals in Turin. He won the season-ending event in each of the last two years.
His team said he would follow treatment for inflammation in the knee, taken now so that he has time to prepare for 2027. Sinner posted a video on X with the same decision in his own words.
The absence is long enough to move the year-end ranking. Zverev, the world number two, won the French Open and the US Open this season and has cut the gap. Reuters reported that the German could finish 2026 at number one if the points fall that way while Sinner adds none. Sinner's ranking is protected only by the points he already holds. Those points start to come off as the events he misses replace the events he won last year.
The calendar he is giving up is specific. The indoor swing includes Vienna, Basel and Paris. The ATP Finals, on home ground in Turin, were the week where he closed the last two seasons. Missing Turin removes both the ranking points and the match practice he would have taken into 2027. The medical call, as his team framed it, was to treat the knee now rather than carry inflammation through those weeks.
Sinner has not played since 12 July. That is already nearly three months. Adding the rest of October and November takes the layoff close to half a year. He won Wimbledon in that last match, so the last image of him on a court in 2026 is a major title, not an injury retirement. The knee problem that followed is the reason the title did not lead into a summer and autumn defence.
The ranking arithmetic is the part other players can use. Zverev's two majors this year, Roland Garros and the US Open, are the largest point blocks available. Sinner's Wimbledon title is also a large block, but it is already banked. From here to the end of the season Sinner's total can only fall, as older points drop and no new points arrive. Zverev's total can still rise at the indoor events and at the Finals, if he qualifies. That is the route Reuters identified for a year-end number one.
Carlos Alcaraz, who won in Tokyo on the same day, is the other name in that race. He was out for more than four months with a wrist injury and has only just started collecting points again. A Tokyo title does not close a gap built by a player who has been number one all season. It does mean the indoor field will not include the man who has held the top spot.
Sinner did not give a return date beyond the start of preparations for 2027. The statement from his team used the word inflammation and did not describe surgery. That leaves the winter for treatment and for the decision, later, on whether the knee is ready for the Australian Open. Nothing in Tuesday's announcement fixes that date.
What Tuesday does fix is the rest of this season. The number one will not be in Vienna, Basel, Paris or Turin. The points he would have played for stay on the table for Zverev, Alcaraz and the rest of the top eight. The last match of his 2026 is the Wimbledon final he won on 12 July.
