Over 200 Sikh community representatives, including families of 1984 anti-Sikh riot victims, gathered near Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s residence in New Delhi on Saturday. They burned his effigy and beat it with slippers to protest remarks allegedly describing former Congress MP Sajjan Kumar as a “party role model.”
Sajjan Kumar, convicted in the 1984 riots, died two days earlier. The protesters expressed anger over the reported characterisation. Police monitored the demonstration.
The gathering followed public statements linked to Kumar’s death. Community leaders said the comments reopened old wounds for families who lost relatives in the violence that followed Indira Gandhi’s assassination.
No arrests were immediately reported. The protest remained peaceful beyond the symbolic burning of the effigy.
