Shelton reaches the U.S. Open final and the first American slam chance since 2003

Ben Shelton beat Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5 on 11 September in the U.S. Open semi-finals. The match lasted 3 hours and 17 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Shelton hit 20 aces. He is 23. Sunday's final is his first Grand Slam title match. The opponent is Alexander Zverev, the top seed, who beat Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-6 (9-7), 7-6 (8-6) earlier in the day.

No American man has won a major singles title since Andy Roddick at this tournament in 2003. Shelton is the first Black American man in the U.S. Open final since Arthur Ashe in 1972, and the first Black man in any Grand Slam singles final since Jo-Wilfried Tsonga at the 2008 Australian Open. The semi-final draw had already guaranteed that a Black American man would reach the final. Shelton made the date concrete.

The evening began with the 25th anniversary of the 11 September attacks. Tiafoe took the first set after Shelton double-faulted at 4-5. From there Shelton raised his first-serve speed and closed the spaces Tiafoe had found on the backhand. He broke in the fifth game of the third set. In the fourth, Tiafoe pushed again. Shelton held, then broke on a Tiafoe double fault to close it.

Zverev arrives with a different ledger. He won his first major at the French Open in June, lost the Wimbledon final to Jannik Sinner in July, and has now reached three straight Grand Slam finals. He was runner-up in New York in 2020 to Dominic Thiem. He opened this fortnight with two five-setters and has shortened the matches since. Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, the usual wall at this stage, have been dealing with injuries. Shelton removed Alcaraz, the defending champion, in the quarter-finals.

"Hopefully I can not make the American dream come true on Sunday," Zverev said. Shelton, on court, pointed to his mother. "Without her there's no Ben Shelton standing here today. This one is for her." The crowd included Serena Williams, Stan Smith, Lindsay Davenport, Ben Stiller, Rami Malek and Jalen Brunson. That list is colour, not tactics. The tactics are serve plus first-strike forehand against Zverev's height, return depth and experience in second weeks.

The prize is $5.5 million to the winner, the same figure attached to the women's final. The ranking consequence sits with Zverev more than with Shelton. A first major for the American would end a 23-year drought and rewrite the home story of this tournament. A third straight final win for Zverev would make 2026 his year even if Sinner stays at number one.

Sunday is 13 September. Arthur Ashe will be loud. The facts that matter going in are short: Shelton has never played a slam final, Zverev has now played a string of them, and the last American man who lifted this trophy did it before Shelton started school.
