At least 17 people died and 25 were injured in a crowd crush at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata on the evening of October 17, 2026. West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said the dead included a seven-year-old girl. Six bodies had been identified by late Saturday. Police placed the incident at roughly 7:40 p.m. at the exit gate of the Sarada Park (Chor Bagan) site under Girish Park police station.
Heavy rain began while thousands of devotees waited outside the temporary pavilion. An announcement from organizers is reported to have added to the confusion. The crowd waiting outside surged forward seeking shelter, people fell, and those behind pushed over them. Eyewitnesses described narrow gates, poor lighting in the surrounding lanes, and a curved exit that became a bottleneck. Some accounts mention a portion of the iron structure above the Durga idol collapsing under the pressure. The entire sequence unfolded in five to seven minutes.
Injured people were taken to Calcutta Medical College and Hospital. Hospital sources reported that more than 30 patients arrived; at least 15 were in serious condition at one point. Police, fire brigade, and disaster-management teams cleared the site. The pandal was closed to further visitors. Organizers and private security personnel were detained. Adhikari said a probe would examine the circumstances and that steps would be taken.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s office announced compensation of 200,000 rupees for the next of kin of each deceased person and 50,000 rupees for each of the injured. Home Minister Amit Shah postponed scheduled programs in West Bengal to visit the hospital. The administration advised several large theme pandals to close temporarily while safety reviews proceed.
Durga Puja draws millions of visitors to temporary pandals across Kolkata each October. The Chorbagan site is a long-running community celebration near Muktaram Babu Street. Narrow approach lanes and limited exits have been noted in previous years. Similar crowd incidents have occurred at other Indian festivals: seven died in a Bihar temple stampede in August, 30 at the Kumbh Mela last year, and 121 in Uttar Pradesh in 2024. The Kolkata event adds to that pattern of high-density gatherings managed with temporary infrastructure.
Police said all injured persons were removed to hospital and the site secured. Relatives continued to arrive at the medical college overnight. The exact number of injured remains fluid as additional patients are identified. Whether the final toll rises depends on the condition of those still in critical care. The probe will examine crowd-control measures, the timing of the rain announcement, and the structural condition of the pandal.
