Indian equity markets rebounded sharply on Tuesday 13 October. The BSE Sensex rose 1,109.10 points, or 1.54 per cent, to close at 73,033.78 near its session high. The Nifty 50 advanced 358 points to finish above 22,721. It was the largest single-day gain for the Sensex in four months and reversed the previous session’s decline.
HCL Technologies led the advance. The stock climbed 8.28 per cent after the company reported a 21.18 per cent year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit for the July-September quarter to ₹5,132 crore. Revenue rose 11 per cent. The results exceeded market expectations and lifted other information-technology shares. Broader buying followed in banking and industrial names as traders covered short positions.
Retail inflation for September stood at 5.54 per cent, according to data released earlier. The figure remains above the Reserve Bank of India’s 4 per cent medium-term target but within the 2-6 per cent tolerance band. Bond yields had risen in recent sessions on liquidity tightening by the central bank, with the 10-year government bond yield touching 7.37 per cent at one point. Tuesday’s equity gains occurred despite those higher yields and continued foreign portfolio outflows earlier in the month.
Market participants pointed to the HCLTech numbers as the immediate catalyst. The company has reported accelerating enterprise digital contracts. Other large IT firms have yet to report full quarterly results, so the sector’s overall trajectory remains unclear. Domestic institutional investors were net buyers on the day while foreign investors remained cautious. Trading volumes were higher than the recent average as the index recovered from Monday’s losses.
The rebound leaves the Sensex still below its recent peaks but reduces the drawdown that had accumulated over the previous week. No major policy announcement accompanied the move. The Reserve Bank of India has maintained its policy stance amid global energy-price pressures linked to the Iran conflict and Houthi disruptions in the Red Sea. Analysts will watch the next set of corporate results and the path of the rupee for signals on whether the recovery extends.
HCLTech’s profit figure of ₹5,132 crore is the concrete data point that drove the largest single-stock contribution to the index gain. The 1.54 per cent rise in the Sensex equates to roughly ₹1.1 trillion in additional market capitalisation on the day, concentrated in the IT and financial sectors. Further sessions will show whether the move attracts sustained inflows or remains a short-covering bounce.
