Sato takes the Central League Triple Crown as Hanshin sweeps nine titles
Teruaki Sato finished the Central League season at .306 with 39 home runs and 106 runs batted in, the first Japanese Triple Crown in Hanshin history. Randy Bass was the last Tiger to do it, in 1986. The club also took eight other individual titles.

Teruaki Sato did not need a hit on Thursday. He went 0 for 4, batting second and playing third base, in Hanshin's 4-0 loss to Yakult at Koshien, and the Central League Triple Crown was still his. Shota Morishita, the teammate who had trailed him by four home runs, also failed to homer. Sato closed the year at a .306 average, 39 home runs and 106 runs batted in. He also led the league with 165 hits, a fourth title that does not sit inside the old name but changes the size of the season.
He is 27. The last Nippon Professional Baseball Triple Crown was Munetaka Murakami of Yakult in 2022, now with the Chicago White Sox. Sato is the ninth man to do it and the 13th Triple Crown in league history. For Hanshin, the last one was Randy Bass in 1985 and again in 1986. That is a 40-year gap. Sato is the first Japanese player to win a Triple Crown in a Hanshin uniform.
A wider Koshien than the one Bass played in
The park matters to the club's own reading of the number. When Bass played, lucky zones sat in the left-centre and right-centre gaps at Koshien and shortened the fence. Those zones are gone. Chunichi Shimbun noted that a Triple Crown in the wider modern park is a first for the franchise, even though Bass did it twice in the smaller one. Sato's 39 home runs also ended a run at back-to-back 40-homer seasons. The title did not require the 40th.
The line of Triple Crown winners in Japan is short enough to list. Haruyasu Nakajima of the Giants did it in the autumn of 1938, the first. Katsuya Nomura of Nankai, now SoftBank, was the first after the war, in 1965. Hiromitsu Ochiai won three. Sadaharu Oh and Bass won two each. Boomer Wells of Hankyu, now Orix, won one. Nobuhiko Matsunaka of Daiei, now SoftBank, won in 2004. Murakami won in 2022. Sato joins that list in a year when his own club had already clinched the pennant.
Nine titles in one clubhouse
Hanshin secured a second straight Central League title, its eighth, on 3 October. When the schedule ended on Thursday the individual sheet belonged to the same club. Nikkan Sports counted nine titles. Morishita, 26, took the on-base percentage crown, his first. Haruto Takahashi, 30, won 16 games against three losses and led in winning percentage at .842. Shoki Murakami, 28, took the earned-run title at 1.85, just ahead of Takahashi's 1.87, and made it two years running. Hiroto Saiki, 27, led in strikeouts with a career-high 175, also a second straight title.
That cluster is the practical fact under the headline. A Triple Crown in a lost finale is a batting story. Nine titles in a pennant year is a roster story. The pitching side did not ride one ace. Takahashi's wins, Murakami's runs allowed and Saiki's strikeouts are three different jobs. Morishita's on-base title means the man who chased Sato for home runs still had a category of his own when the last out was recorded.
What the number is for
Sato's 0 for 4 on the last day is useful because it shows how the race actually closed. He did not win it with a final swing. He won it because Morishita could not close a four-homer gap in one game, and because the average and the runs batted in were already clear. Fans at Koshien saw a right-field out in the sixth and a shutout loss. The table, published after the Central League schedule ended, is what the winter will use.
The next argument is whether 39 and 106 travel. Murakami's 2022 Triple Crown was the last domestic one, and he has since played in the American League. Sato is four years younger than Murakami was in that season. Hanshin has not said anything about a posting. The record that is settled is the domestic one: first Japanese Triple Crown at Hanshin, first in the post-lucky-zone park, and a ninth name on a list that had not grown since 2022.
