Russian missiles and drones struck Kyiv overnight, killing at least 14 people and injuring dozens more, Ukrainian officials reported on Thursday.
The barrage also hit 28 other locations across the country. Residences, warehouses, a school and a children’s hospital were among the sites damaged in the capital region. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the assault as an attempt to cause as much damage as possible to civilian infrastructure.
Ukraine continues to face shortages of air-defence interceptors. Russian forces have intensified long-range attacks in recent weeks, taking advantage of the depleted stocks. The latest wave comes as Ukrainian strikes inside Russia have contributed to fuel shortages at Russian petrol stations, with reports that seven in ten stations in some areas have run dry.
Local residents in Kyiv searched through wreckage on Thursday morning. Emergency services worked through the night to extinguish fires and recover casualties. The exact death toll may rise as more rubble is cleared.
The pattern of attacks has shifted toward civilian and energy targets after earlier focus on military infrastructure. Ukrainian officials say the goal is to erode public morale and stretch the country’s remaining defensive resources.
Western partners continue to discuss additional air-defence packages, yet delivery timelines remain uncertain. Meanwhile, Russia has imported gas to offset losses from Ukrainian strikes on its energy facilities.
The overnight barrage underscores the attritional nature of the conflict more than four years after the full-scale invasion began. Both sides face resource constraints, yet the ability to sustain long-range strikes remains a decisive factor in the current phase.
