Russian drones struck a crowded shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih on 21 August 2026, killing at least 16 people and wounding more than 130, among them 23 children. The attack came in two waves roughly 30 minutes apart.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who was born in the city, described the second strike as deliberate targeting of emergency responders already on scene. Local defence council head Oleksandr Vilkul said the drones flew at extremely low altitude, limiting detection.
Regional authorities reported 29 people in serious condition, including five children. Nine individuals, two of them children, were still listed as missing the following day as rescuers cleared rubble from the Soniachna Halereia complex.
The daytime attack occurred while the mall was open and busy. Fire engulfed thousands of square metres before being extinguished. Ukraine has called the strike a terrorist act and renewed requests for additional air-defence interceptors.
Russia has not publicly commented on the specific target. The incident forms part of a broader intensification of long-range drone and missile strikes against Ukrainian cities.
Further casualty figures and identification of the missing are expected as recovery work continues.
