Guy Parmelin, president of the Swiss Confederation, arrives in India on Monday for a state visit that runs to 7 October. The Ministry of External Affairs said he comes at the invitation of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with a delegation of officials and business leaders. It is his first state visit, and his second trip to India this year. He was in New Delhi in February for the AI Impact Summit.
The working day on 5 October is a meeting with Modi. The MEA said the two would review trade and investment, science, technology, innovation, mobility, culture and people-to-people contact, and would compare notes on regional and multilateral questions. President Droupadi Murmu hosts a banquet. External affairs minister S. Jaishankar calls on Parmelin. On 6 October he is due at Noida International Airport. On 7 October he joins the second India-EFTA Prosperity Summit. The calendar is short, and each stop has a different audience.
Why Noida airport is on a Swiss programme
Noida International Airport Ltd said on Sunday that Parmelin would visit the site on Tuesday. Shailendra Kumar Bhatia, additional chief executive of the Yamuna Expressway authority and nodal officer for the airport, confirmed the 6 October stop. Officials said he would be shown the terminal, the cargo building and the business facilities. The airport, at Jewar, is still the largest unfinished aviation project in the National Capital Region. A Swiss president walking a cargo hall is a signal to freight and precision-engineering firms that already use Zurich and Geneva as their Indian gateway, not a ribbon-cutting.
Swiss firms in India cluster in machinery, pharmaceuticals, rail equipment and specialty chemicals. A cargo terminal with a customs process they can see is a more concrete ask than a communique on innovation. The MEA list includes mobility, which in this relationship usually means visas for engineers and trainees, and the social-security arrangements that decide whether a Swiss posting in Pune is worth taking.
The EFTA summit is the point of the week
The prosperity summit on 7 October is the second of its kind. EFTA is Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland. India signed a trade and economic partnership with the four in 2024, built around market access and a pledged investment figure that New Delhi has treated as the political core of the deal. A summit in the week of a Swiss state visit is where that pledge gets a public progress mark: how much has been committed, how much has been spent, and which states have landed projects.
Parmelin is not a ceremonial president in the French sense. Under the Swiss rotation he is head of state for the year and head of a department. His February trip was a technology conference. This one is the trade relationship. The difference shows in the guest list the MEA described: business leaders, not only diplomats.
What would count as a result
A banquet and a review meeting are the minimum for a state visit. A result would be narrower. A dated investment announcement tied to the EFTA pledge, a mobility arrangement with a number of visas or a recognised qualification, or a cargo commitment at Jewar that a Swiss forwarder can use. None of those had been published by the time Parmelin's aircraft was due. The visit runs three days. The airport tour is Tuesday. The summit is Wednesday. Those are the two moments when a figure can still be attached to the trip.
