Irkutsk hospitals close after a lab worker's death; Rospotrebnadzor cites pneumonia
Darya Shipilova, 28, a technician at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Institute in Shelekhov, died after being admitted on 29 September. Rospotrebnadzor calls the case pneumonia of unknown cause and says the situation is stable. Four hospitals in Irkutsk have imposed quarantines.

Hospitals in Irkutsk have closed their doors for quarantine after the death of a laboratory technician at the city's anti-plague institute, while Russia's public health agency says she died of pneumonia of unknown cause and that the situation is stable. The gap between those two accounts is the story.
Darya Shipilova, 28, worked at the Irkutsk Anti-Plague Research Institute in Shelekhov, a satellite city of Irkutsk. She was admitted to the district hospital on 29 September and died two days later, Meduza reported, citing local outlets. Some early accounts said she died overnight on 2 October. People of Baikal and the Kyiv Independent described the death as plague. Rospotrebnadzor, in a statement issued after the hospital closures were reported on 4 October, did not use that word. It said special measures followed a case of pneumonia of unknown cause in an employee of the institute, and that the public health situation in Irkutsk region, Irkutsk and Shelekhov was stable.
Which buildings are shut
People of Baikal reported that City Clinical Hospitals No. 1, No. 3 and No. 10, and the Ivano-Matreninskaya Children's Hospital, had imposed three-week quarantines. A source told the outlet that pneumonic plague controls are not applied to one ward. They are applied to medical facilities together. That is why a children's hospital appears on a list that began with an adult lab worker. The source was explaining the protocol, not confirming a diagnosis.
Artem Fominykh, director of the Irkutsk Aluminium Plant in Shelekhov, announced a mask mandate for employees on 4 October and told them to seek care if they felt ill. An aluminium plant is not a hospital. Its workforce is large, local, and in daily contact with Shelekhov. A mask rule there is a practical signal that plant management is not treating the Rospotrebnadzor line as the end of the matter.
Two versions of how she fell ill
Local media have offered two accounts, and neither has been confirmed by the institute. One says Shipilova was admitted with pneumonic plague after a trip to Thailand. The other says she broke a test tube containing the plague pathogen while collecting samples, about a week before she died. The institute exists to handle Yersinia pestis and other high-consequence bacteria. A broken tube is a known class of lab accident. A travel infection is a known class of import. The official statement chooses a third description, pneumonia of unknown cause, and pairs it with the word stable.
Pneumonic plague is the lung form of infection with Yersinia pestis. It spreads by respiratory droplets, which is why a single lab case triggers a wider net than bubonic plague, the form spread by fleas. Treatment is antibiotics, given early. A delay of two days between admission and death is consistent with several severe pneumonias, not only plague. That is why the official wording can be true as a description of what has been proved, and still leave the hospitals closed.
What the quarantine actually does
A three-week hospital quarantine in Irkutsk means new admissions stop or slow, visitors stop, and staff who were exposed are watched. It does not, on the facts released, mean a city-wide lockdown. Rospotrebnadzor has not published a case count beyond the one employee. It has not said how many contacts are in observation. EuroWeekly and other outlets have cited a figure of about 200 workers quarantined. That number has not appeared in the agency statement summarised by Meduza.
The useful distinction for anyone reading the next bulletin is simple. If Rospotrebnadzor names Yersinia pestis, the lab-accident account becomes the working hypothesis and the hospital list is the start of a contact trace. If it keeps the phrase pneumonia of unknown cause, and the four hospitals stay shut, the public record will contain a death, a mask rule at an aluminium plant, and an agency that has not confirmed the pathogen the institute was built to study.
