A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck near Pitaloza Arriba in Panama on or around 11 October 2026, leading authorities to declare a state of emergency as aftershocks rattled communities and tsunami warnings were issued for coastal zones. Initial reports described panic in affected areas and the collapse of at least one cathedral structure.
The United States Geological Survey recorded the event. Depth and precise epicentre details place it in a seismically active zone. Local officials moved to assess damage to buildings, roads and critical infrastructure while rescue teams checked for casualties. No comprehensive death toll has been released in the first hours, but the scale of the quake is large enough to produce widespread structural damage in a country with mixed building standards.
Tsunami alerts were issued for nearby coasts. Residents in low-lying areas were advised to move to higher ground. Aftershocks continued, complicating search efforts and raising the risk of further collapses. Panama’s emergency management agencies activated response protocols and requested international monitoring support.
The quake is the strongest recent event in the region and follows a pattern of significant seismic activity along the Central American margin. Earlier smaller quakes had been recorded in Alaska and near Kamchatka, but the Panama event is the one with clear local impact. Communication and power lines were disrupted in the immediate vicinity.
Authorities continue to tally the number of injured and the extent of damage to schools, hospitals and transport links. The declaration of emergency allows the government to mobilise additional resources and restrict movement in unsafe zones. The open question is whether the mainshock has already caused the majority of structural failures or whether a strong aftershock will produce further collapses in already weakened buildings.
