Ontario Premier Warns of Cutting Power and Minerals if US Trade Fight Escalates

Ontario Premier Doug Ford issued a blunt warning on Monday that Canada could cut off electricity exports and critical mineral supplies to the United States if the escalating trade dispute continues to worsen.

Speaking in an interview, Ford said former US President Ronald Reagan would be “throwing up” and “disgusted” by the current tariff policies. He stressed that Canada has significant leverage because of its energy exports and mineral resources essential to American industry.

The comments came as President Trump threatened additional 50 percent tariffs on Canadian automobiles, trucks, parts and steel starting in 2027, following the weekend imposition of 50 percent duties on about $20 billion of Canadian goods.

Canada has already announced dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs set to begin on September 8. Ford’s remarks reflect growing frustration among provincial leaders who see the integrated North American economy under threat.

Ontario is a major supplier of electricity to several US states and hosts significant critical mineral production. Any interruption would carry immediate economic consequences on both sides of the border.
