ICMR Says No New H1N1 Strain Circulating in India; Existing Vaccines Sufficient

The Indian Council of Medical Research said on Sunday that the Influenza A (H1N1) viruses currently circulating in India belong to the A/Missouri/11/2025 (H1N1) pdm09-like virus strain.

ICMR clarified that no new strain of H1N1 has been identified and that existing vaccines remain sufficient. There is no cause for panic, the statement indicated.

Cases have been reported in Delhi and several other states. Delhi alone has recorded more than 1,700 cases in recent tracking. Northern states have seen elevated numbers during the current season.

Health authorities continue routine surveillance and laboratory confirmation of influenza samples. Public guidance emphasises vaccination for high-risk groups and standard preventive measures.

The clarification addresses concerns that had circulated about a possible novel variant. Laboratory characterisation of isolates has confirmed continuity with the known pdm09 lineage.

State health departments are monitoring hospital admissions related to influenza-like illness. The overall situation remains within expected seasonal patterns according to the national assessment.
