Normandy TER derails at Cléon: 44 hurt, one 18-year-old flown to Rouen in critical condition

A regional passenger train on the Rouen-Caen line derailed at Cléon in Seine-Maritime on Friday evening, injuring 44 people. Prefect Jean-Benoit Albertini said one of the injured, an 18-year-old woman, was in critical condition and was taken by helicopter to the CHU in Rouen. Transport Minister Philippe Tabarot first reported about 20 injured and 180 passengers. The prefecture later put the passenger count at 186 and the injured at 44.

The train left the rails about 19:45 local time between Tourville and Elbeuf-Saint-Aubin. French police said it struck an unidentified object. SNCF said an investigation into the cause is open. Photographs showed three carriages on their sides. The prefecture triggered the Orsec mass-casualty plan. Tabarot said 140 firefighters were at the site. A medical-psychological emergency unit was set up for passengers.

What stopped moving

SNCF suspended service between Rouen and Caen and between Caen and Le Havre and said replacement buses would run. The prefecture told the public to stay away from the sector. SNCF Réseau told AFP that the first tasks were care for travellers and then restoration of the line.

Cléon sits just south of Rouen, on a busy Normandy corridor that feeds Caen and the Channel ports. A TER service at that hour is a commuter and regional mix, not a high-speed train. The object on the track has not been identified in public. Until investigators name it, the working account is mechanical and local: a regional set hit something, three cars rolled, 44 people were hurt.

The first hours

Passengers described being thrown from their seats. Local media quoted one traveller saying they could no longer stay on the bench. Night photographs showed emergency lights on the embankment and people walking away from the wreck along the ballast. The 18-year-old's transfer by air is the single gravest medical fact released so far. No death has been announced.

France's rail network has had a run of incidents this year that keep the safety argument in politics. This derailment will be read through that lens once the object and the speed are known. For Friday night the operational picture is narrower. A TER with about 180 to 186 people on board went off the rails at Cléon. Forty-four were injured. One young woman is in intensive care in Rouen. The line is closed. Buses are running. The cause is listed as an unidentified object pending the inquiry.
