Nobel week opens Monday at 11:30 in Stockholm with medicine
The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet will announce the physiology or medicine prize on 5 October, not before 11:30 CEST. Physics follows on Tuesday at 11:45 at the earliest. The six announcements run through 12 October. Each prize this year is decided by a final vote after months of closed reports.

The 2026 Nobel announcements begin on Monday at the Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. The physiology or medicine prize will be named at 11:30 CEST at the earliest. The assembly does not publish the shortlist. It publishes a name, or names, and a short account of the work, then takes questions. The live stream is on the Nobel Prize channels.
The week is fixed by the prize-awarding bodies, not by the news calendar. Physics is due on Tuesday 6 October, at 11:45 CEST at the earliest, at the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. Chemistry follows on Wednesday. Literature is announced in Stockholm on Thursday. The peace prize is announced in Oslo on Friday. The economics prize, awarded by the Swedish central bank in memory of Alfred Nobel, closes the round on Monday 12 October. The official window for the six announcements is 5 to 12 October.
The selection has already happened in the legal sense. Nominations close many months earlier. Committees commission reports. The institutions vote in early October, before the public hour. Monday's event is the release of a decision, not the making of one. A delay past 11:30 usually means the citation is still being checked, or that more than one laureate has to be reached, not that the vote is being rerun on camera.
Medicine is first because Karolinska's assembly keeps that slot. The prize can go to one person or be split, at most three. The citation is narrow on purpose. It names a discovery, not a career. In recent years the Monday prize has gone to work on immune regulation, mRNA methods, and sensory receptors. That pattern does not predict 2026. It does predict the shape of the morning: a scientific clause, the names, and then a scramble to explain a paper most readers have not seen.
The money and the ceremony are later. The award ceremony is on 10 December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel's death, in Stockholm for five of the prizes and in Oslo for peace. The sum is set by the Nobel Foundation from the estate's income and is the same for each prize in a given year, split if there are co-laureates. Monday's announcement does not change the amount. It attaches names to it.
What readers can use before the hour is the timetable and the rule on splits. A single laureate means the assembly judged one line of work decisive. Two or three means it judged the discovery shared, often across a lab and a rival lab, or across a method and the first clear use of it. The peace prize on Friday is the one announcement that can name an organisation rather than a person. Literature on Thursday names a body of work, not a paper. Physics and chemistry name experiments or theories. Mixing those formats is how the week gets misread.
The open question on Sunday night is only who has been told to keep a phone free at 11:30 Stockholm time. The committees do not confirm calls. A laureate who is reached speaks after the chair has already said the name.
