Grenada will hold a general election on 5 November, according to a notice in the government Gazette issued on Saturday. The same notice set 15 October as the day for formal submission of nomination papers. Xinhua carried the Gazette text on Saturday from Mexico City. Local media said Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell would announce the date formally on Monday. The last general election was in June 2022.
The gap between the Gazette and the prime minister's microphone is the detail that matters this weekend. In Westminster-style systems in the Caribbean, the governor-general issues the writ on the advice of the prime minister, and the Gazette is the legal record. A Monday speech does not move the date the Gazette has already fixed. It tells parties and voters that the government accepts the notice as the campaign clock. Nominations on 15 October leave 21 days until polling day. That is a short list-building window for any group that is not already organised in the 15 constituencies.
Mitchell has been prime minister since the June 2022 election, when his National Democratic Congress defeated Keith Mitchell's New National Party. A 5 November poll is inside the constitutional term rather than a snap call at the outer edge. The Gazette does not, by itself, say which seats the government thinks are close. It does start the legal period in which a candidate must file papers, pay the deposit and name assentors. A person who misses 15 October is not on the ballot, whatever the Monday rally says.
Grenada's house is small. Fifteen seats decide the government. A swing of two or three constituencies changes the prime minister. That is why a three-week nomination-to-poll calendar favours the two parties that already have agents in every parish. Smaller lists have until the 15th to find candidates who can file. The Gazette notice does not publish a campaign-finance rule or a new boundary. It publishes two dates.
Voters abroad are a standing factor on an island of this size. Rules on proxy and overseas ballots, if unchanged from 2022, will decide whether the diaspora vote is a speech or a stack of papers. The notice summarised by Xinhua did not amend those rules. Anyone reading Monday's announcement for a change in franchise will need the Gazette text, not the clip.
What is fixed tonight is the pair of dates: nominations on 15 October, polling on 5 November, last election June 2022, prime minister's formal word still due on Monday. The open question is whether Mitchell's Monday statement adds a dissolution detail the Saturday notice left implicit, or simply reads the Gazette into a microphone.
