New Yalu River Bridge Between China and North Korea Opens After 12-Year Delay

The New Yalu River Bridge linking Dandong in China's Liaoning province with Sinuiju in North Korea will open to traffic on Thursday, 15 October. Chinese state media Xinhua reported the decision on Wednesday after consultations between the two sides. A joint opening ceremony is planned for the same day. North Korean state media had not confirmed the date when the Chinese announcement appeared.
The bridge is 3,026 metres long and carries four lanes. China financed the construction, which began in October 2011 and finished in October 2014 at a cost of roughly 2.2 billion yuan. For twelve years the structure stood unused because North Korea had not completed the approach roads and customs facilities on its side. Relations also cooled after Pyongyang's nuclear tests and the resulting UN sanctions. Vehicles were recently seen crossing, and flags of both countries appeared at the North Korean entrance earlier this week, indicating a test period.
The new crossing is intended to replace the older Sino-Korean Friendship Bridge as the main road route for trade. The Friendship Bridge carries a single lane of road traffic alongside a railway and has long been a bottleneck. Some analysts expect freight volume between the two cities to rise substantially once the new bridge operates regularly, though UN sanctions on North Korea will continue to limit what can actually move. Tourism visas for Chinese citizens have not resumed.
The opening follows a series of high-level contacts. Kim Jong-un visited China last year; Xi Jinping travelled to North Korea in June. The two leaders agreed to elevate relations and expand exchanges. Last month North Korea and Russia opened their first road bridge across the Tumen River, part of Pyongyang's effort to diversify partners while still relying on Beijing for the bulk of its trade. The Yalu bridge adds a second major land link after years of closed borders during the COVID-19 period.
South Korean media have tracked the bridge's status for more than a decade. Yonhap and the Korea Herald noted that customs buildings on the North Korean side are nearly finished and that Dandong listed the opening as a local priority for 2026. The Institute for National Security Strategy in Seoul described the decision as evidence of an economic bargain between Beijing and Pyongyang rather than a simple thaw. No detailed schedule of daily traffic or tariff arrangements has been released.
For the border cities the practical change is the addition of a modern four-lane road where only a constrained older crossing existed. Whether the volume of goods and people rises quickly will depend on how North Korea staffs the customs post and on the continuing weight of international sanctions.
