Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated Pune Metro Line 3, known as the Pink Line, on 3 November 2026 through video conferencing. The 23 km elevated corridor connects Maan near the Hinjewadi IT hub to the District Court Metro station at Shivajinagar. It was built at a cost of over Rs 8,300 crore.
The line will be operated entirely by women train operators, the first such arrangement on an Indian metro corridor. Approximately 30 percent of its electricity requirements are planned to come from solar power. Of the 23 stations, 17 are expected to open for passenger service initially, with the remaining stations phased in over the following months. Public operations are scheduled to begin shortly after the inauguration.
On the same occasion Modi laid the foundation stone for four additional corridors under Pune Metro Phase-II, estimated at around Rs 13,500 crore. The combined value of the projects announced is about Rs 21,800 crore. Phase-II includes Lines 2A, 2B, 4 and 4A, which will extend the network to areas including Kharadi, Hadapsar, Warje and Nanded City.
The ground event took place at the Balewadi Sports Complex in the presence of Maharashtra Governor Jishnu Dev Varma, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers Eknath Shinde and Sunetra Pawar. Modi addressed the gathering by video link at 12.30 p.m. The Pink Line is implemented by Pune IT City Metro Rail Limited under a design-build-finance-operate-transfer public-private partnership model.
The corridor is intended to cut travel time between the Hinjewadi employment cluster and central Pune. Commuters currently rely on road transport along congested routes. Metro connectivity is expected to shift a portion of that traffic. The Research Designs and Standards Organisation inspected the line, and the Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety granted the necessary approvals earlier in the year.
Pune’s metro network has expanded in stages since the first lines opened. The Pink Line adds a direct north-west link. Completion of the Phase-II corridors will further increase coverage across residential and commercial zones. Ridership figures and actual journey-time savings will become available once regular services begin and passenger counts are recorded.
