A Russian drone struck Kyiv's Northern Bridge on Sunday as German Chancellor Friedrich Merz arrived in the city to air-raid sirens. Mayor Vitali Klitschko announced the hit. It was the latest strike on a crossing over the Dnipro, after two other bridges linking the west and east of the capital were hit in recent days.
Merz's visit was not on a public schedule. He said he had travelled to Kyiv because Ukraine would need support in the coming weeks, and that if Russia were not stopped its war machine would later turn on others. He wrote on X that he had come with the message that Kyiv could rely on Berlin. Economy minister Katarina Reiche travelled with him, along with executives from Siemens Energy and Diehl Defence. Foreign minister Andriy Sybiha met the party at the train platform.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Merz met at the National Academy of Sciences, which a Russian drone hit on 28 September. Merz noted that the academy sits a few hundred metres from the German embassy. He called the pattern of strikes daily war crimes. Zelenskyy told him residents were living through terrible nights and days. The two also went to the memorial for fallen soldiers on Independence Square.
The timing was the point of the trip and the point of the strike. Russia had warned on Saturday that foreign visitors, including diplomats, faced mortal danger in the capital. Merz came anyway. Moscow said on Sunday it would intensify strikes on Kyiv and other cities. Radio Free Europe reported that the chancellor was expected to announce a military package including interceptors able to hit Russian jet-powered drones. Berlin had not published the list by the time the bridge was hit.
The Northern Bridge is not a symbolic target in the way a government building is. It is one of the crossings that tie the two banks of a city of about three million. Two other Dnipro bridges had already been struck in recent days. A campaign against crossings forces traffic onto fewer spans, slows repair crews, and makes each remaining bridge a higher-value target. Klitschko's announcement on Sunday put the Northern Bridge in that sequence.
Reiche's presence, and the company executives with her, mark this as an industrial visit as well as a military one. Siemens Energy and Diehl Defence do not sign communiques. They sell turbines, grid equipment, and air defence components. A chancellor who brings them is talking about what can be delivered in weeks, which is the horizon Merz used in his own statement. He said Ukraine was facing decisive weeks.
The academy meeting has a narrow geography. The building was struck on 28 September. The German embassy is a few hundred metres away. Merz used that distance in his remarks. It is a way of saying the strikes are landing inside the diplomatic quarter, not only on the outskirts. Air-raid alarms sounded more than once during the visit. CNN reported explosions and air defence fire as the party was in the city.
What Berlin has not yet itemised is the interceptor package RFE/RL said was coming. Jet-powered drones are a different problem from the slower Shahed-type airframes Ukraine has been shooting down for years. An interceptor matched to them is a specific munition, not a general pledge. Until the list is published, the visit is a presence and a sentence about reliance. The bridge strike is the fact on the ground the sentence has to sit beside.
Kyiv still has to move people and supplies across the Dnipro on the spans that remain. That is the consequence that outlasts the photographs from Independence Square. Merz leaves with a warning he delivered in person. The city keeps the damaged bridge.
