McConnell returns to the Senate in a wheelchair after three months away
The 84-year-old Kentucky Republican cast his first floor vote since 11 June, after a June fall, mild pneumonia and rehabilitation.

Senator Mitch McConnell came back to the Senate floor on 14 September for the first time since 11 June. He arrived in a wheelchair, spoke briefly to reporters outside the chamber, and voted on a federal appeals court nominee. He is 84. He has said he will leave the Senate when this term ends in January.
His office has given this account of the gap. On 14 June he fell at his Capitol Hill home and was taken by ambulance to George Washington University Hospital. He was treated for mild pneumonia and then for rehabilitation. He went home on 6 August. The office released photographs and statements in his name. He was not seen in public until Monday evening. Childhood polio, he said in a written statement, made recovery harder. “I'm still not quite back to 100%.”
To reporters he used a lighter line. After decades of dodging questions, he said, he had not been sure how many of them would still be there. “Time to get back to work, finish the job of this Congress.” He said he wanted to move farm legislation, support NATO, and counter Russian attacks on Ukraine. He ignored a question about whether he would serve out the term. In the longer statement he promised Majority Leader John Thune he would try to be present for tough votes while he continues physical therapy.
The Senate had just returned from a five-week recess. The farm bill is due in the Agriculture Committee this week. Midterms are in November. McConnell still sits on Agriculture and Appropriations. Sen. John Hoeven said he expected him for key votes, including the farm bill session on Wednesday. Colleagues surrounded him on the floor to shake his hand.
The political fact is smaller than the photographs. One vote by a retiring senator does not change the map. It does end weeks of rumour about whether Kentucky still had two working senators. It also puts a frail former leader back in the room for the last stretch of a Congress that has to pass spending and a farm bill before an election.
McConnell has frozen in public before, in 2023, and has used a wheelchair at times for years. Monday was different because the absence was long and unexplained at the start. The office filled the gap with medical notes after the fact. The senator filled it by appearing. Whether he can keep a committee schedule through November is a question for his doctors and for Thune whip count, not for a single Monday vote.
He did not say he is well. He said he is back for the votes the conference needs. That is the sentence the Republican cloakroom wanted. The rest of the term will show if it is also true.
