Landslide at Conakry Landfill Kills at Least 30 in Guinea

A landslide at the Dar Es Salam landfill in Guinea’s capital Conakry killed at least 30 people after heavy overnight rains caused a large mound of waste to collapse onto nearby tents and shacks.

Civil protection services confirmed the death toll on Sunday and said rescue operations were continuing. The site is the largest landfill in the city and has long been a location where informal settlements sit close to accumulated refuse.

Officials attributed the collapse directly to the volume of rain that saturated the waste pile. Similar incidents have occurred in other African cities during intense rainy seasons when informal housing borders poorly managed disposal sites.

The government ordered additional safety assessments of remaining waste piles while emergency teams worked through the debris.
