Ladakh plants 90,000 Iranian saffron corms on 4,000 square metres at Spituk Pharka
Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena said 800 kilograms of saffron corms have gone into the ground at Command Area Gate 27 in Spituk Pharka, Leh. The plot is part of Project Him Sarovar and of 800 acres being brought back with water from the restored Igoo-Phey canal. Only corms above 10 grams flower.

Ladakh has put 90,000 saffron corms, weighing 800 kilograms, into 4,000 square metres at Command Area Gate No. 27 in Spituk Pharka, Leh. Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena announced the planting as the first large saffron trial in the Union Territory. The land was barren until it was brought back under Project Him Sarovar. The corms are Iranian, selected at a circumference of 8 to 10 centimetres, a diameter of 2.5 to 3 centimetres or more, and a weight of 10 grams or more.
The plot sits inside a larger repair. Officials said the site is part of 800 acres in Leh being restored with water from the Igoo-Phey irrigation canal, which has itself been restored and opened. Saffron is the crop chosen for this gate. The rest of the acreage is the water story underneath it.
Why the corm weight is the real specification
Saffron is not grown from seed in this kind of trial. It is grown from a corm, the underground storage organ. Agriculture officers on the project said only corms above 10 grams bear flowers, and that the number of flowers tracks the size of the corm. A lighter corm can sit in the soil and produce leaves. It will not produce the red stigma that is the crop. The 10-gram floor is why the consignment was specified by circumference, diameter and weight together, rather than by count alone.
Ninety thousand corms at 800 kilograms is an average of about 8.9 grams if the weight is spread evenly, which sits just under the 10-gram flowering threshold. The project statement says the planted stock meets the 10-gram standard. The average and the minimum are different numbers. If the lot is mixed, the flowering share will be the corms at the top of the weight range, not the mean. That is the figure to watch at the first harvest, not the headline count of 90,000.
The climate the plant is being asked to accept
Saffron is an autumn crop. The conditions cited for it are a minimum temperature of about 8 to 10 degrees Celsius and light to moderate snow. Leh can supply the cold. The open question is whether the snow and the irrigation from Igoo-Phey arrive in the window the corm needs, and whether the restored soil holds moisture after years of lying unused. Project Him Sarovar is a land-recovery scheme. Saffron is the test crop on one gate of it, not a declaration that the plateau now grows the spice Kashmir is known for.
Saxena said the trial could add a cash crop for farmers, young people and self-help groups, and that it would test the claim that saffron cannot be grown in Ladakh. He also said it would test the claim that degraded land in the region cannot be brought back. Those are two claims. The canal answers the second, if the water keeps flowing. The corms answer the first, if they flower.
What a first harvest would have to show
No yield has been claimed, because nothing has been picked. A saffron harvest is measured in grams of dried stigma per hectare, not in corms planted. Kashmir's established fields are the comparison, and this plot is 4,000 square metres, which is 0.4 of a hectare. Even a good yield on that area is a sample, not a market. The economic case Saxena described depends on a later scale-up, onto more of the 800 restored acres, and on a price for Ladakh stigma that buyers will pay against Iranian and Kashmiri lots.
The planting itself is done. The site is named. The water source is named. The corm specification is named. What is not yet known is the flowering rate, the stigma weight, and whether a second season is planted. Until those three numbers exist, the project is a field trial on recovered ground, not a new saffron region.
The stake for the canal
Igoo-Phey is the part of this story that outlasts the spice. Eight hundred acres brought back with a restored canal is a land figure. Four thousand square metres of saffron is the visible crop on one gate. If the corms fail and the canal still runs, the land recovery continues and the crop choice changes. If the corms flower and the canal fails, the trial has a single season. The two results are separable, which is why the gate number and the canal name both belong in the record of what was planted in Leh this week.
