Blazy's fifth Chanel show opens on a silk slip, a camellia, and Gabrielle's own 2.55
Matthieu Blazy showed Chanel's spring/summer 2027 collection in Paris on 6 October, his fifth runway for the house. Matthieu Blazy showed Chanel's spring/summer 2027 women's collection in Paris on 6 October. It was his fifth runway at the house. Reuters photographed the show for its pictures of the day. Who What Wear's Natalie Munro, writing the same day, described an opening look built as Gabrielle before Chanel: a pared-back, corsetry-inspired ensemble, a frosty silk slip with a camellia, and Gabrielle Chanel's own 2.55 bag, taken from the Patrimoine archives.
The bag is the concrete object. A 2.55 from the house archive, carried on the first exit, is not a seasonal novelty. It is the 1955 handbag, named for the February date it was introduced, put back on a model at the start of a show whose designer has been in the job long enough for this to be his fifth collection. Blazy took over Chanel after Virginie Viard. Five shows is the point at which a debut reading no longer explains the clothes. The archive bag says he is still arguing with the founder's objects, not only with the last season.
Munro's account of the skirts is the other specific claim. The knee-length pencil skirt was cut in gauzy silk and in tweed, threaded with metal, beaded, and then pushed the other way into high-volume tulle. One skirt block, four materials. Tweed is the house cloth. Tulle at volume is the departure inside the same silhouette. A reviewer can call that playful. The verifiable part is the range of cloth on a single shape, in one show, on 6 October.
The set, in the same account, used birds on the runway. The opening model walked that runway in the slip and the archive bag. Guests named in the piece included Dua Lipa, Ayo Edebiri, Nicole Kidman and Pedro Pascal. A front row is not a review. It is a list of who the house seated for the fifth show, and it is a list of people whose attendance will be the photograph that outruns the clothes in the next day's papers. The clothes Munro actually described are the slip, the camellia, the 2.55, and the pencil skirt in silk, tweed, beading and tulle.
Chanel shows during Paris Fashion Week are ticketed as theatre. The useful question for a fifth collection is what has changed since the first. Munro's reading was that Blazy's modern Chanel woman still looks like the woman of the debut, and that this collection lets successive chapters of Gabrielle Chanel's life sit together rather than pick one decade. The opening title she reported, Gabrielle before Chanel, is a designer's framing. The object that makes it checkable is the archive bag. A house that lends the founder's 2.55 to a look called before Chanel is making a point about origin, and it is using stock it does not sell.
The camellia is the other house sign on that first exit. It has been a Chanel flower for decades, in cloth and in metal. On a silk slip, next to a 1955 bag, it is the small mark that tells a room which codes are still mandatory. Blazy has not dropped it by show five. He has put it on the look that opens the collection. That is a choice about sequence. The first thing the room sees is the flower and the founder's bag. The tulle skirts come later.
Paris Fashion Week's spring/summer 2027 shows are the trade's bet on clothes that will be in stores in 2027. A review published on the night of 6 October cannot yet say what will be produced. It can say what walked. What walked first, on the account that described the exit in detail, was a silk slip, a camellia, and a 2.55 that belongs to the archive rather than to the commercial line. The pencil skirt, repeated in tweed and in tulle, was the shape the rest of the show kept returning to. Those are the facts a reader can take out of the night without the guest list.
The guest list is still part of the record. Lipa, Edebiri, Kidman and Pascal were there. So were the clothes. The fifth show is the one where the designer can no longer be introduced. The archive bag on the opening model is how this collection introduced itself instead.
