Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes finished third in the Mexico City Grand Prix on November 1, 2026, and became Formula One’s youngest world champion. At 20 years and 68 days old, he surpassed the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel, who was 23 years and 134 days old when he won his first title in 2010. Antonelli is also the first Italian drivers’ champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
He needed only a ninth-place finish or better to clinch the title with four races remaining. He crossed the line 3.207 seconds behind race winner Max Verstappen of Red Bull and second-placed Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari. His points lead became unassailable at 119 points. Antonelli has 380 points from the races completed so far and has recorded nine victories this season.
The race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez included two safety cars, multiple incidents, and a red-flag stoppage of roughly 33 to 45 minutes after Valtteri Bottas crashed heavily in his Cadillac. Hamilton started from pole and finished second after contact with teammate Charles Leclerc. Verstappen took the win, his sixth in Mexico City. Antonelli moved past Leclerc for third around lap 48 and held the position to the end.
On the team radio after the chequered flag, Antonelli told engineer Peter Bonnington, “Thank you so much. We did it. We did it.” He later said he was speechless and trying to process the result. He credited Mercedes and his family. Toto Wolff, Mercedes team principal, noted that some sponsors had questioned Antonelli’s place on the grid after a difficult 2025 debut season. The 2026 campaign produced a clear reversal.
Antonelli also won the Italian Grand Prix at Monza earlier in the year after recovering from 19th place, the first Italian victory at the circuit since 1966. He has set other early records, including the youngest pole position and the youngest driver to lead the championship. Four races remain, ending in Abu Dhabi in December. Verstappen and Hamilton will contest second place in the standings.
Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali said Italy had waited 73 years for the moment. Vettel publicly congratulated Antonelli on breaking the age record. The high-altitude Mexico City circuit and the interrupted race tested consistency more than outright speed on the day the title was decided. Antonelli’s points margin and race-win total supplied the margin that made a midfield result sufficient.
The outcome closes a rapid rise. Antonelli entered the sport with extensive testing in recent Mercedes cars and delivered consistent results once the 2026 car proved competitive. His title is the first for Mercedes since Hamilton’s seventh championship in 2020.
