Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes became the youngest Formula 1 World Champion on November 1, 2026, by finishing third in the Mexico City Grand Prix at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez. At 20 years and 68 days old, the Italian surpassed the previous record held by Sebastian Vettel, who claimed his first title in 2010 at 23 years and 134 days. Antonelli is also the first Italian driver to win the championship since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
He started the 71-lap race from fourth on the grid. Max Verstappen of Red Bull won the event, holding off Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari for the victory. Antonelli needed only a ninth-place finish to secure the title with four races remaining, but he delivered a podium. His lead in the standings reached an unassailable 119 points. Teammate George Russell finished sixth, and Hamilton took second after contact with his Ferrari teammate Charles Leclerc early in the race.
The afternoon included interruptions. A heavy accident involving Valtteri Bottas brought out a red flag. Later, a collision between Oscar Piastri and Arvid Lindblad triggered a safety car with eight laps remaining. Verstappen controlled the restart and crossed the line 0.799 seconds ahead of Hamilton. Antonelli finished 4.006 seconds behind the winner. On the slowing-down lap, the Mercedes radio erupted as the team confirmed the championship. Antonelli’s voice cracked as he replied, “Thank you so much. We did it. We did it.”
Antonelli joined Mercedes for the 2025 season after Lewis Hamilton moved to Ferrari. In his second year of Formula 1 he has already claimed the title, a trajectory that began with junior success and continued with rapid progression through the feeder series. One standout performance earlier in 2026 came at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, where he recovered from 19th to win on home soil, the first Italian victory at the Temple of Speed since 1966. That result reinforced his championship challenge.
The Mexico City circuit sits at more than 2,200 metres above sea level, reducing engine power and altering aerodynamics. Antonelli managed the conditions cleanly through the red-flag period and the late safety car. After the race he told the crowd he was speechless and trying to process the result. He credited Mercedes, his family, and the team. Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali noted that Italy had waited 73 years for a third world champion. Giuseppe Farina won the inaugural title in 1950, and Ascari followed with consecutive championships in 1952 and 1953.
The podium carried extra symbolism. Verstappen and Hamilton, who between them hold 11 titles, finished first and second while the new champion stood on the third step. Antonelli will receive the official trophy at the FIA gala in Shanghai in December. With four races still to run, the result ends the championship battle early and gives Mercedes its first drivers’ title since 2020. The remaining rounds will determine the constructors’ standings and secondary positions, but the drivers’ crown is settled.
