Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes became the youngest Formula 1 world champion in history on November 1 at the age of 20 years and 68 days. He finished third in the Mexico City Grand Prix behind race winner Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton, securing an unassailable lead with four races remaining.
Antonelli needed only to finish ninth to clinch the title. His third-place result left him 119 points clear of the field. Sebastian Vettel had held the previous record as the youngest champion, winning his first title in 2010 at 23 years and 134 days. Antonelli is also the first Italian drivers' champion since Alberto Ascari in 1953.
The race at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez featured two safety cars, multiple incidents and a 33-minute red-flag stoppage with 25 laps remaining. Verstappen took his sixth victory in Mexico City. Hamilton started from pole and finished second after a close contest with teammate Charles Leclerc. Antonelli started fourth, held position through the early chaos and moved into the podium places after the restart.
On team radio after the chequered flag Antonelli said, "We did it, we did it." Later he told the crowd he was speechless and trying to process the result. Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali noted that Italy had waited 73 years for the moment. Mercedes secured its first drivers' title since 2020.
Antonelli replaced Hamilton at Mercedes for the 2025 season. In his rookie year he was outscored by teammate George Russell. In 2026 he recorded nine wins, including a recovery from 19th to first at the Italian Grand Prix at Monza, the first Italian victory there since 1966. He arrived in Mexico as the clear championship leader.
The high-altitude Mexico City circuit, at roughly 2,200 metres, has traditionally favoured certain engine characteristics and tyre strategies. The red-flag interruption and subsequent restart compressed the field and produced several position changes in the final stint. Antonelli maintained third place to the finish.
Four races remain on the 2026 calendar. Antonelli will receive the official championship trophy at the FIA gala in Shanghai in December. Verstappen moved into second in the standings after the Mexico result. Russell and Hamilton are mathematically eliminated from the title fight.
Antonelli's rapid rise from junior formulae to a drivers' title in his second full season has drawn comparisons with earlier young champions. His 2026 campaign included consistent podium finishes and race wins on varied circuits. The Mexico result closes the championship mathematics while leaving the remaining races as opportunities for further wins and team points.
