Democrats hold leads in five of seven critical Senate races according to New York Times/Siena University polls released in the final days before the midterm elections. In Michigan, Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed leads Republican Mike Rogers 53 percent to 42 percent among likely voters. In Texas, Democrat James Talarico leads Republican Ken Paxton by seven points. The other three races with Democratic advantages are not named in the initial summary, but the overall picture shows Democrats positioned to gain seats if the leads hold.
Republicans currently hold a slim majority in the Senate. Democrats need a net gain of four seats to retake control. The Michigan seat is open after the retirement of a Democratic senator. Texas has been a Republican stronghold, so a Talarico lead would represent a significant shift if confirmed on election night. Early and mail voting is already substantial in several of these states. In Michigan alone roughly two million ballots had been cast before the final weekend.
The Michigan race received an additional late variable when Democratic Representative Haley Stevens endorsed Rogers on Sunday after losing the primary to El-Sayed. That endorsement has not yet been factored into the published polls. Stevens’s primary support totaled about 730,000 votes. Whether any portion of those voters follow her switch remains an open question for Tuesday’s count. Other races appear more stable in the final polling.
The midterms will also decide control of the House of Representatives, where Republicans are defending their majority. National generic ballot polling has shown Democrats ahead by several points among likely voters in recent surveys. Individual district outcomes will determine the final margin. Voting concludes on Tuesday, with results expected to begin arriving after polls close in the eastern time zone and continuing through the night and into Wednesday in western states.
The combination of Senate leads in five battlegrounds and a generic ballot advantage gives Democrats a plausible path to majorities in both chambers. Actual results will depend on turnout, late shifts and the accuracy of the final polls. The Michigan endorsement and the Texas numbers are the two developments most likely to be watched closely as returns come in. Certified outcomes will not be available for days or weeks in close races.
