Kenya confirmed its first Ebola case on Tuesday after a Kenyan citizen who had lived in the Democratic Republic of Congo for seven years died in Nairobi. Health Minister Aden Duale said the man had been ill for about a month, travelled by road to Kampala, and boarded a Jambojet flight to Nairobi on Saturday. He died late on Monday. Laboratory tests identified Bundibugyo virus, a rare Ebola species for which there is no proven vaccine or treatment.
The patient passed ordinary public screening at Nairobi's main airport. Patrick Amoth, director-general of the health ministry, said medication may have masked his symptoms at that point. A relative then took him to Nairobi Hospital. Doctors moved him to an isolation unit built during the Covid-19 pandemic. Duale said he developed fever, chills, intense fatigue, weakness, painful swallowing, muscle pain and bleeding under the skin. Samples taken there tested positive for Ebola Bundibugyo virus.
Contact tracing is the immediate task. Reuters reported that eight family members and 21 health workers who attended the patient had been quarantined. Authorities were also looking for 23 passengers and four crew from the Kampala flight. Al Jazeera, citing Duale, put the identified contacts at 28, including family and carers, with 23 fellow passengers still being sought. Amoth said contacts will stay in isolation for 21 days and will be released only if they test negative. Duale added that Kenya had trained nearly 5,000 health workers on prevention and case management before this import.
The route matters because Uganda had already closed its border with Congo in May and had declared itself free of an earlier linked outbreak in August. That earlier episode produced 20 cases and two deaths. The patient spent a night in Uganda before flying. Ugandan government spokesperson Alan Kasujja pushed back on Tuesday, saying, "Leave Uganda out of this conversation. We don't have Ebola here." Kenya is the third country to record a case tied to the current Congo epidemic.
Congo declared the outbreak on 15 May. It is the country's 17th Ebola epidemic and, on the government's Friday figures, the worst in its history. Confirmed cases have passed 8,300 across seven provinces. More than 4,000 people have died. Health officials have said the chain may have begun months before the formal declaration. Bundibugyo is not the Zaire strain that killed more than 11,000 people in West Africa in 2014-16, and the licensed vaccines and antibody drugs developed for Zaire do not have proven effect against it. Some candidates have been trialled. None is approved.
Nairobi Hospital said it had stepped up infection control, contact tracing and staff monitoring after the death. The city is East Africa's main air hub. A missed airport screen, followed by a hospital admission before isolation, is the sequence Kenyan officials are now trying to close. The incubation window for the people on Saturday's flight runs through late October. If any of those 23 passengers or four crew develop fever in that period, Kenya's count will no longer be a single imported death.
Duale has not named the patient. The ministry has also not published the seat map or the hospitals in Congo where he was treated before the road journey. Those gaps sit next to a hard number that is already public: more than 4,000 dead in Congo, and one confirmed death in a Kenyan isolation ward that was built for a different virus.
