Kazakhstan’s Adilet Party Wins Over 71% in Parliamentary Election

Kazakhstan’s newly created Adilet party secured more than 71 percent of the vote in Sunday’s parliamentary election, according to preliminary results announced by the Central Election Commission on Monday.

The outcome strengthens President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s position following constitutional changes that replaced the previous bicameral legislature with a single 145-member chamber known as the Kurultai.

Voter turnout reached approximately 74 percent of the 12.6 million eligible citizens. Adilet, founded earlier this year by Tokayev’s close aides and which absorbed the former ruling Amanat party, took the overwhelming majority of seats.

Four other parties also crossed the 5 percent threshold to enter parliament: the rural-focused Auyl party, pro-business Respublika and Ak Zhol, and the centre-left Nationwide Social Democratic Party. All are regarded as broadly supportive of the current administration.

The election forms part of Tokayev’s political reforms initiated after the deadly unrest of 2022. Official results are expected by the end of the month. The new structure is intended to give parliament greater weight while maintaining strong presidential authority.

Tokayev has indicated he retains the legal right to seek another term under the revised constitution.
