Katie Zacharia left the role of White House press secretary on Friday, October 16, after five days. President Trump confirmed the decision while speaking to reporters on the South Lawn before departing for a campaign rally in Georgia. He said he had told her earlier that day, “Honestly, if I were you, I’d reconsider. Katie, do you need this? I don’t think you need this.”
Zacharia, a conservative commentator who previously worked at the parent company of Truth Social, was named to the post roughly a week earlier after Karoline Leavitt stepped aside in August. Her first and only briefing took place on Tuesday. She read largely from prepared notes, took questions from three outlets, and ended the session after about 14 minutes. Reports noted several verbal stumbles. Subsequent coverage focused on whether she had described herself as an attorney. Trump had referred to her as one. Zacharia later confirmed she took the bar exam once and did not pass.
White House aides described her as isolated from decision-making during the short tenure. Some staff learned of the change from news reports. Zacharia posted a statement praising Trump and calling the work an honor. Sources said she and her family were scheduled to have dinner with Vice President JD Vance on Friday evening. She is expected to move to another role in the administration.
The five-day span is shorter than Anthony Scaramucci’s 11 days as communications director in 2017. Trump told reporters the media had been harsh and that he wanted Zacharia to have a better experience. No formal reason was issued beyond the president’s public comments. The White House has not named a replacement.
The episode occurs 17 days before the midterm elections. Zacharia’s selection followed a pattern in which Trump has elevated figures who performed well on television. The rapid reversal after one briefing and the credential questions leaves the press operation without a permanent spokesperson heading into the final stretch of the campaign. Whether the next appointee receives a longer runway will depend on how the White House manages the remaining public schedule.
