ISRO Places NVS-03 in Orbit, Restoring NavIC to Minimum Operational Strength
GSLV-F18 lifted off from Sriharikota on 30 October 2026 and placed the 2,250 kg NVS-03 satellite into a precise geosynchronous transfer orbit, adding an indigenous atomic clock and the L1 signal to restore India's regional navigation system to its minimum four-satellite configuration.

The Indian Space Research Organisation launched the NVS-03 navigation satellite on 30 October 2026 from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. The GSLV-F18 rocket lifted off at 23:51 IST from the second launch pad and, after an 18-minute flight, injected the 2,250 kg satellite into an elliptical geosynchronous transfer orbit with a perigee of 170.31 km and an apogee of 38,080 km.
ISRO Chairman V Narayanan described the insertion as one of the vehicle's best performances. The planned apogee had been 37,247 km. The satellite's solar panels deployed and systems reported normal function. NVS-03 carries an indigenous rubidium atomic clock alongside procured clocks. It also transmits the L1 signal in addition to the existing L5 and S-band signals.
This marks the third satellite in the second-generation NVS series for the Navigation with Indian Constellation, known as NavIC. With NVS-03 now in orbit, the constellation reaches its minimum operational configuration of four satellites. Earlier failures of atomic clocks and the inability to place NVS-02 into its final orbit had reduced the system's independent positioning capability. Narayanan noted that two indigenous clocks were already in orbit; the third arrived with this launch.
The mission used an unusual precaution. ISRO flew NVS-03 with three pyro valves already open. A national committee chaired by former ISRO chief Kiran Kumar had validated the approach through vibration and shock tests. The step addressed the NVS-02 failure, in which the drive signal failed to reach the pyro valve on the oxidiser line of the liquid apogee motor. By keeping the valves open, engineers removed that single point of failure for the orbit-raising burns that will move the satellite from transfer orbit to its final geosynchronous slot.
GSLV-F18 was the 20th flight of the vehicle. The turnaround between this mission and the previous GSLV flight (GSLV-F17 with EOS-05 on 4 September) stood at 56 days, one of the shortest intervals for the heavy-lift rocket. The three-stage vehicle, roughly 50 metres tall and weighing about 420 tonnes at liftoff, used its indigenous cryogenic upper stage. All stages performed as predicted.
NavIC provides position, navigation and timing services over the Indian landmass and a region extending roughly 1,500 km beyond India's geopolitical boundary. The addition of the civilian L1 band improves compatibility with commercial receivers. Applications include real-time tracking of trains, aircraft and ships, as well as civilian timing services. Narayanan has stated that the full planned constellation of seven navigation satellites would deliver optimal performance, but four operational satellites restore the minimum required for location data.
The satellite's design life is 12 years, though Narayanan has expressed confidence it will serve longer. Once in its final geosynchronous orbit, NVS-03 will join the existing operational satellites to strengthen India's independent regional system. The successful placement closes a gap created by earlier clock failures and the NVS-02 setback, returning a functional minimum constellation after months of reduced capability.
Engineers will now command the onboard propulsion system to raise the orbit. The open pyro valves were intended to ensure those burns can proceed without the valve-related interruption that ended the previous attempt. With solar panels already deployed and systems healthy, the next steps centre on precise orbit raising and on-orbit testing of the indigenous clock and the new L1 signal.
