Three executions in one day
Indiana, Florida and Alabama each put a condemned man to death by lethal injection on Thursday, November 5. The three deaths occurred within roughly 18 hours and formed the second such triple execution in the United States in 2026.
Indiana executed Jeffrey Weisheit, 50, shortly after midnight at the state prison in Michigan City. Officials pronounced him dead at 12:45 a.m. local time after a single-drug injection of pentobarbital. Weisheit had no final words. His last meal was barbecue ribs.
Florida followed in the early evening. Jesse Guardado, 64, died at Florida State Prison near Starke at 6:13 p.m. Eastern Time after a three-drug protocol. Alabama completed the sequence about an hour later when Michael Shannon Taylor, 54, was pronounced dead at 6:10 p.m. Central Time (7:10 p.m. Eastern) in the state prison at Atmore.
The crimes
Weisheit was convicted of killing his girlfriend’s two children in a 2010 house fire near Evansville. He set the blaze with road flares after an argument and left eight-year-old Alyssa Lynch and five-year-old Caleb Lynch inside. A jury sentenced him to death in 2013. Indiana Governor Mike Braun declined a clemency request that cited a recent botched execution in Tennessee involving the same drug.
Guardado pleaded guilty to the 2004 murder of 75-year-old Jackie Malone in Walton County, Florida. He stabbed and beat her inside her home, then took a jewelry box, $80 and other items to buy drugs. Malone had previously helped him find work and housing. He wrote in a clemency letter that he offered “no excuses for what I did, only my sincerest apologies and regrets.” Governor Ron DeSantis denied the request. The execution was Florida’s 19th of 2026, matching the state’s total for the entire previous year.
Taylor was convicted of the 1991 robbery and beating deaths of Ivan Moore, 83, and Lucille Moore, 79, in their Gadsden, Alabama home. He struck both with a metal bar, then fled in their Cadillac. Authorities later arrested him in Birmingham. Taylor had once selected nitrogen hypoxia as his method, but the state proceeded with lethal injection. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey denied clemency.
Context on the death penalty
Triple executions remain rare. Before 2026 the last day with three U.S. executions was January 7, 2010. An earlier triple this year occurred on August 13 when Oklahoma, Tennessee and Alabama each carried out an execution. Death penalty monitors note that the timing is coincidental rather than coordinated.
The broader pace has accelerated. From January 2025 through early November 2026, 11 states have executed 79 people, more than in any other two-year stretch in more than a decade. Florida has set the pace with a record number of executions under Governor DeSantis. Indiana’s execution of Weisheit was its first of the year. Alabama’s was its third.
On the same day, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced he would commute all 548 remaining death sentences in that state to life without parole. Newsom called state-sanctioned killing incompatible with California values. Most of those commutations still require state Supreme Court approval. California has not carried out an execution since 2006.
Aftermath and questions
Weisheit’s attorney, Joseph Perkovich, had pointed to questions surrounding pentobarbital after two recent Tennessee cases in which inmates survived initial doses. Courts rejected requests to halt the Indiana and other executions on that basis. Families of the victims in the three cases have long sought the executions as the final legal outcome of the convictions.
The three deaths bring the 2026 national total higher and keep capital punishment active in a handful of states even as others have effectively ended it. No further executions were scheduled for the immediate days ahead in the three states that acted on November 5.
