The incident
A Lakewood Police Department agent was killed and three others wounded on the evening of November 5 after a man opened fire near a Regional Transportation District bus at West Colfax Avenue and Wadsworth Boulevard in Lakewood, Colorado. Officers responded around 6:30 p.m. local time to a report of a suspicious person who may have been involved in a hit-and-run earlier that day. The man was attempting to board the bus when officers approached. Within seconds he began shooting. Officers returned fire and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
Four officers were struck. One died after being taken to Denver Health. The other three remained hospitalized, with conditions not fully detailed in initial reports. A civilian was also wounded and transported to a hospital. Lakewood spokesperson John Romero said the department’s main concern was the family of the fallen agent and the three who were still receiving care. Names of the officers and the suspect had not been released as of early November 6.
Official response
Colorado Governor Jared Polis said in a statement that he was heartbroken to learn a Lakewood agent had been killed in the line of duty. He extended condolences to the family and thoughts to the three injured agents and the wounded civilian. A line of law-enforcement vehicles gathered outside Denver Health in what appeared to be a procession for the officer who died. RTD confirmed that a contracted bus on Route 76 was involved. The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team is investigating, with support from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
Witnesses reported hearing rapid gunfire, with some accounts estimating eight or nine shots. One vehicle was reported to have struck the rear of the bus during the confusion. Passengers on the involved bus were transferred to another vehicle. The intersection, a busy commercial corridor roughly five miles west of downtown Denver, was closed while investigators worked through the night.
Immediate aftermath
The shooting left one officer dead, three officers and one civilian injured, and the suspect dead. No further details on the suspect’s identity or motive have been released beyond the possible earlier hit-and-run connection. Romero said additional information would be provided the following day. The incident is the most recent fatal shooting of a law-enforcement officer in the Denver metro area and has drawn statements of support from state officials. Investigators continue to reconstruct the sequence from body-camera footage, witness accounts and physical evidence at the bus stop.
The four officers were taken to area hospitals including Denver Health and St. Anthony. One patient at St. Anthony was reported to have non-life-threatening injuries. The exact number of rounds fired and the precise positions of those involved remain under review by the multi-agency team. For the families of the Lakewood agents, the night ended with one death and three ongoing hospital stays. For the city, the intersection reopened only after the scene was processed and the bus was removed.
