On November 2, 2026, the Ministry of Defence signed contracts totaling Rs 53,866.50 crore with Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Limited (GRSE) and Goa Shipyard Limited (GSL) for the construction of eight Next Generation Corvettes for the Indian Navy. The agreements were signed at Kartavya Bhawan in New Delhi in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh.
GRSE will build five of the vessels and GSL will build the remaining three. The project is the first in which warships designed by the Indian Navy will be constructed by Defence Public Sector Undertakings selected through competitive bidding. Previous naval ships have often involved private yards or foreign designs.
The corvettes are intended for anti-surface and anti-submarine warfare, coastal defence, littoral operations, maritime surveillance, and protection of sea lines of communication. They will carry advanced missiles, weapons systems, and sensor suites that allow operations across air, surface, and subsurface domains. Exact sensor and weapon specifications have not been released in full.
Defence officials stated that construction will generate approximately 72 lakh person-days of employment in the shipyards and another 460 lakh person-days in ancillary industries and micro, small, and medium enterprises over the next ten years. The combined figure is 532 lakh person-days. The programme is expected to increase the use of Indian materials, components, and skills.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh noted on social media that the contracts strengthen collaboration among defence public sector units, private shipyards, and industrial partners. The vessels will add capacity in the Indian Ocean at a time when Chinese naval activity in the region has increased. Delivery timelines have not been published.
A corvette is a fast, manoeuvrable warship smaller than a frigate or destroyer and suited to near-shore and coastal tasks. The Next Generation design is meant to replace older classes while raising the level of indigenous content. Garden Reach and Goa Shipyard have previously delivered other naval vessels under government orders.
The signing follows other recent defence production moves and aligns with the stated goal of increasing the share of domestic manufacturing in military equipment. No foreign original equipment manufacturers are named in the public announcements of the contracts. The total value is equivalent to roughly $5.6 billion at current exchange rates.
Employment and industrial participation figures are projections supplied by the Ministry. Actual outcomes will depend on the pace of construction, supply-chain readiness, and the performance of the selected yards. The contracts mark a measurable step in the Navy’s shift toward vessels designed and built inside India.
