India’s core sector growth slowed to 5.4 percent in July 2026, down from previous months, as fertiliser and crude oil output fell.
The eight core industries comprise coal, crude oil, natural gas, refinery products, fertilisers, steel, cement and electricity. Official figures released on 21 August showed the combined index moderated.
Fertiliser production declined amid seasonal and input factors. Crude oil output also contracted, reflecting ongoing challenges in domestic extraction.
Steel, cement and electricity continued to post positive contributions, supporting overall growth. Coal production remained stable relative to demand from power and industry.
The core sector accounts for roughly 40 percent of the Index of Industrial Production and serves as an early indicator of industrial activity. The July reading suggests some cooling after stronger earlier figures.
Analysts attribute part of the slowdown to base effects and temporary supply constraints. Policy measures aimed at capacity expansion in steel and cement continue to underpin medium-term prospects.
The data arrive as the government monitors inflation, demand and investment signals ahead of further fiscal and monetary decisions.
Year-on-year comparisons remain positive, yet the sequential moderation points to uneven momentum across the industrial base.
Further monthly readings will clarify whether the slowdown is temporary or part of a broader pattern.
