Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 20 August 2026 called for early resolution of pending water-related issues among southern states. He proposed joint meetings involving the Ministry of Jal Shakti, the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Inter-State Council and the concerned state governments.
Shah made the remarks while addressing water and border management concerns. He noted that previous requests for land to complete fencing along the India-Bangladesh border in West Bengal had not been met by the earlier state government, leaving sections of the frontier unsecured.
Interstate water disputes in the south involve long-running disagreements over the sharing of rivers such as the Cauvery, Krishna and Godavari. Tribunals have issued awards, yet implementation and new claims continue to generate friction. The Centre has sought to facilitate dialogue rather than impose unilateral solutions.
The Inter-State Council provides a constitutional forum for such discussions. Bringing the Home Ministry into the process reflects the security dimension of water stress, including migration, agricultural distress and potential law-and-order consequences.
Shah also announced the Cabinet decision to establish a High Court bench in Ladakh, aimed at improving access to justice in the Union Territory. The move forms part of broader administrative measures for the region.
State governments in the south have been invited to participate in the proposed meetings. The outcome will depend on the willingness of the parties to narrow differences on allocations, project clearances and monitoring mechanisms.
