Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid foundation stones for railway, road and petroleum projects worth approximately Rs 13,000 crore in Tamil Nadu on Sunday. He shared the stage with Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay and said the central government would work with the state administration to advance the projects.
The largest single component is the Rs 4,900 crore Poonamallee–Vadapalani stretch of Chennai Metro Phase 2. Modi and Vijay travelled on the new section during the inauguration. Other works include road upgrades and petroleum infrastructure intended to improve fuel supply and logistics in the state.
Modi told the gathering that his resolve to support Tamil Nadu’s development had remained constant despite changes in government. Vijay responded that strong states make a strong India. The event marked one of the first joint public appearances of the two leaders since Vijay took office.
Tamil Nadu has been governed by parties outside the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance for most of the past decade. The current state government came to power after the most recent assembly election. Central funding for large infrastructure has continued, but political friction over language policy, education and fiscal transfers has been frequent.
The metro extension connects western suburbs to the existing network. Daily ridership projections for the new stretch have not been released. Construction had faced delays linked to land acquisition and utility shifting. The inauguration brings the Phase 2 corridor into partial operation.
Petroleum projects in the package include storage and pipeline works. Tamil Nadu imports a large share of its fuel. Additional capacity is intended to reduce supply disruptions during peak demand or weather events. Exact commissioning dates for the non-metro components were not announced.
Opposition parties in the state criticised the event as a political exercise. They noted that several of the projects had been approved under previous administrations. The state government has said the joint inauguration demonstrates practical cooperation on infrastructure regardless of party differences.
Chennai Metro Phase 2 is planned to add more than 100 kilometres of new lines. The Poonamallee–Vadapalani section is one of the first completed segments. Further stretches remain under construction. The state has sought additional central grants to accelerate the remaining work.
Modi’s visit included the formal opening and foundation-stone ceremonies. No new financial announcements beyond the Rs 13,000 crore package were made. The figure covers projects at various stages of completion.
Vijay’s presence on the stage and the joint metro ride were the most visible signs of coordination. Previous visits by central leaders to Tamil Nadu have sometimes occurred without the chief minister. Sunday’s programme was arranged as a shared event.
Infrastructure spending in Tamil Nadu has focused on urban transport, ports and energy. The state’s industrial base depends on reliable power and logistics. Delays in metro and road projects have drawn criticism from business groups. The partial opening of the new metro section addresses one of those complaints.
The political relationship between the centre and the state will be tested by upcoming budget allocations and by disputes over the Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls. Sunday’s event did not address those issues. It remained limited to the project inaugurations.
Residents of the western suburbs will begin using the new metro stretch in the coming days. Integration with existing lines and feeder bus services is still being adjusted. Early ridership figures will indicate whether the projected demand materialises.
The Rs 13,000 crore package is one of the larger single-day announcements for the state in the current financial year. Implementation timelines for the non-metro works will determine how quickly the announced benefits reach users. The joint appearance itself is the immediate political fact.
