ICMR Confirms No New H1N1 Strain Circulating in India

The Indian Council of Medical Research stated on Sunday that Influenza A (H1N1) viruses circulating in India belong to the A/Missouri/11/2025 (H1N1) pdm09-like strain and that no new variant has been identified.

ICMR clarified that existing vaccines are sufficient and that there is no cause for panic even as seasonal influenza cases continue to be reported across several states, including Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

The agency’s assessment came amid rising case numbers in six states. Health authorities continue routine surveillance and vaccination recommendations for high-risk groups under the existing national influenza programme.

Public health officials emphasised standard measures: early testing of suspected cases, isolation where appropriate, and adherence to hygiene protocols during the monsoon period when respiratory infections typically rise.
