Harmanpreet Kaur leaves the India captaincy after 155 T20Is and keeps her place

Harmanpreet Kaur stepped down as captain of the Indian women's team in all three formats on Tuesday morning, in an Instagram statement posted after she had already led the side to a second Asian Games gold. She is 37. She will keep playing. The Board of Control for Cricket in India has not named a successor.
The numbers on the job are specific. ESPNcricinfo and the ICC both record that she captained India in five Tests, 51 ODIs and 155 T20Is. She took the T20I role in 2016 and became full-time ODI and Test captain in 2022, after Mithali Raj left international cricket. Smriti Mandhana has been vice-captain since 2022 and is the player most often named as the likely next captain. That is a reading of the dressing room, not a board announcement.
Her last act in the role was the Asian Games title in Nisshin last month, a defence of the gold won in 2023. Earlier in September the same side won the Women's Asia Cup. The larger mark on the ledger is the ODI World Cup in November 2025, India's first women's global title, taken at home. Al Jazeera noted that she is the longest-serving captain, among men and women, to have led in more than 150 T20Is.
The timing is not only a personal choice. Cricinfo reported that the statement came a day after Harmanpreet, Mandhana and head coach Amol Muzumdar met BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia in Guwahati to discuss the roadmap for the women's team. The meeting is the concrete institutional fact sitting under the Instagram post. A captain does not usually walk out of a secretary's office and resign the next morning unless the conversation has already covered succession, workload, or both.
"Today, I step down as captain of the Indian Women's Cricket Team across all formats," she wrote. "This is not an easy decision. It carries years of memories, emotions, sacrifices, and moments that will stay with me for the rest of my life." She added that she was leaving with peace because she believed the team was in a good place, "a team with talent, character, belief and a future that I am incredibly excited to watch and be a part of." The line she and the ICC both highlighted was the closer: "Now, I'm ready to play for the love of the game again. Captaincy ends. The journey continues."
That split, captaincy ending and selection continuing, is the operational point for the board. India still has a World Cup-winning batter in the XI. It does not have a named captain for the next bilateral or for the next ICC event. Mandhana's deputy role since 2022 gives the selectors a default, but defaults in Indian cricket are often rewritten by form, by availability, and by the secretary's office. Saikia's Guwahati meeting is the place where that rewrite would already have been sketched, if it has been sketched at all.
The workload figure is the other hard number. One hundred and fifty-five T20Is as captain is a different job from five Tests. The shortest format has been the bulk of her leadership, and it is the format in which India has played the most cricket during her tenure. Stepping away from all three at once, rather than keeping Tests or ODIs, closes the split-captaincy option that some boards use when a leader wants a lighter load. She did not take that option.
Harmanpreet made her ODI and T20I debuts in 2009. The captaincy she is leaving is therefore a late chapter of a long career, not the career itself. The statement is careful on that point. It does not announce retirement. It does not name a successor. It does not mention the Guwahati meeting. The meeting is in the reporting, not in her post.
For the team that won in 2025 and again in Nisshin, the next public fact will be the board's call. Until that call, the side that just defended an Asian Games gold has a former captain in the batting order and an empty chair in the toss.
