Scale of the Violence
Shootings over the Halloween weekend left at least 15 people dead and more than 90 injured across at least 11 states, according to police reports and tallies from the Gun Violence Archive. Incidents occurred at nightclubs, costume stores, outside stadiums, and near college campuses between October 30 and November 1.
One of the earliest fatalities took place at a Spirit Halloween store in Fairfield, California, where gunfire killed a 31-year-old pregnant woman. Another followed the Magic City Classic football game in Birmingham, Alabama. Delaware recorded two mass shootings on Halloween night, including one near its largest university.
Dallas Cluster
In Dallas, three separate shootings in the Deep Ellum entertainment district within roughly 75 minutes early on November 1 killed at least four people and injured 15. Police stated there was no clear indication the incidents were connected. The first occurred around 12:20 a.m. on Elm Street, a second about 45 minutes later a block away, and a third near 1:35 a.m. roughly a quarter-mile distant.
Additional shootings were reported in Jacksonville, Florida, where 13 people were shot and two died in unrelated incidents, including the death of a 17-year-old girl waiting in line for a Halloween party. Other states with reported incidents included Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Arkansas, Colorado, and Mississippi.
Patterns and Response
Many of the shootings took place in areas with large crowds gathered for holiday events. Police departments across the affected cities have opened investigations. No national pattern linking the separate incidents has been established. The weekend ranks among the more violent recent Halloween periods based on preliminary counts of fatalities and injuries.
Local authorities continue to release names of victims as next of kin are notified. The cumulative numbers remain subject to revision as investigations proceed and additional cases are confirmed.
