A localised ceasefire in Ukraine's Kherson region ended on 1 November 2026 after six days. The pause, the longest multi-day truce of the war, enabled humanitarian evacuations from the Russian-occupied town of Oleshky. Ukraine's military said it evacuated 167 civilians from threatened areas of the southern Kherson region on the final day, including 22 children and 21 people with limited mobility.
The ceasefire began early on 27 October after mediation involving U.S. First Lady Melania Trump and Pope Leo. It was initially focused on Oleshky and later expanded across the wider Kherson region. It expired at 22:59 Ukrainian time on 1 November. Neither side reported violations during the period. Ukrainian officials described it as the biggest de-escalation since 2022.
Oleshky has been under Russian occupation since the first days of the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Residents faced severe shortages of food, water, and electricity. Routes out were mined or subject to drone attack. The truce allowed buses to carry people out. Evacuees traveled through Russia into Belarus before returning to Ukrainian-controlled territory. Emotional reunions occurred on 31 October.
Ukraine's Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets confirmed the end of the ceasefire, which had run from 27 October to 1 November. He called it an important step in joint humanitarian efforts. Kherson region Governor Oleksandr Prokudin urged residents to stay vigilant and avoid so-called red zones near the Dnipro river. Ukrainian General Staff said forces observed the ceasefire and acted within the agreements. Humanitarian cargo reached its destination and those who wished to leave returned to Ukrainian territory.
Ukrainian officials said Russian forces used the pause to rotate units, fortify positions, expand anti-drone measures, and deliver ammunition. A Ukrainian military officer told media that fighting could be worse than before when it resumes. Russia declined a proposal to extend the ceasefire. Fighting continued elsewhere in Ukraine throughout the local pause.
Residents of Kherson city itself reported a brief period of quiet after years of drone and artillery attacks. One resident called it a breath of fresh air and used the time for ordinary tasks such as pruning plants. The city remains on the Ukrainian-controlled side of the Dnipro. The evacuation from Oleshky was the main humanitarian achievement of the truce.
The war has entered its fifth year. Russian forces hold most of the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions on the southern front, along with large parts of Donetsk and Luhansk. The localised nature of this ceasefire limited its scope to one sector. No broader talks on a wider pause have been announced.
Ukrainian air defenses and alerts continued in other regions. On the evening of 1 November, Ukraine's air force said its air alert system was hacked with a false radiation warning over Kyiv. Strikes elsewhere cut power to thousands of households, including in the Dnipro and Kyiv regions. These events were separate from the Kherson pause.
The successful evacuation of civilians from Oleshky demonstrates that limited humanitarian corridors can function when both sides observe them. The refusal to extend leaves the remaining population in the occupied town exposed again. Ukrainian forces recorded Russian logistics activity during the quiet period. Future local arrangements will depend on whether similar mediation produces agreements that both parties honor beyond the immediate humanitarian window.
Kherson region authorities continue to monitor the situation after the expiry. No immediate resumption of hostilities in the specific zone was reported in the hours after the deadline. The broader front line remains active. The episode provides a concrete example of a mediated pause that delivered evacuations without reported breaches, even as larger military dynamics continued unchanged.
