Haiwaan opens at Rs 3 crore net and trails a film on its 36th day

Haiwaan, Priyadarshan's Hindi remake of his own 2016 Malayalam film Oppam, collected Rs 3 crore nett in India on Friday, its first day. Sacnilk put the India gross at Rs 3.60 crore and overseas at about Rs 1 crore, for a worldwide gross of Rs 4.60 crore. The film played 7,224 shows. Occupancy sat at 11 percent for the day on one count and 12.42 percent on another, rising from about 5 percent in the morning to above 18 percent at night.

Those numbers would be a problem for any two-star Hindi vehicle. They are a sharper problem for this one. Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan last shared a frame in Tashan in 2008. Trade desks had treated the reunion, and Priyadarshan's name, as a floor under the opening. The floor did not hold. Haiwaan now sits in the cluster of Akshay's weakest post-pandemic Day 1s: Sarfira at about Rs 2.50 crore, Selfiee at Rs 2.55 crore, Bell Bottom at Rs 2.70 crore, Mission Raniganj at Rs 2.80 crore. Bhooth Bangla, his previous Priyadarshan theatrical, opened at Rs 28.70 crore and finished at Rs 271 crore worldwide.

The comparison that travelled on Saturday was not with those older titles. It was with Hanuman Ansh, a biographical drama on Neem Karoli Baba that is in its sixth week. On Friday, Day 36, Hanuman Ansh made Rs 12.41 crore gross, or Rs 10.50 crore nett, and took its total to Rs 205.73 crore gross. That is more than two and a half times Haiwaan's entire first day. Mirzapur: The Movie, the other holdover in the same weekend, also kept seats that Haiwaan needed.

Haiwaan is a crime thriller. Kumar plays a visually impaired man who witnesses a murder and must protect a child. That is the Oppam spine, which Mohanlal carried in Malayalam. Reviews on Friday repeated a line that is now standard when a Hindi remake of a South original arrives with bigger stars: filling that performance is hard. The supporting cast includes Saiyami Kher, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Rajpal Yadav, Sharib Hashmi and the late Asrani. KVN Productions and Thespian Films produced.

Weekend occupancy will decide whether Friday was a dead open or a slow build. Night shows already ran hotter than matinees, which is the pattern of a film that needs word of mouth rather than advance booking. The advance, clearly, was thin. A second day that cannot double Friday's nett will push the film toward a quiet second week and toward digital.

The wider point for Hindi studios is not new and Saturday made it specific. Star pairings and a proven director are no longer a substitute for an audience that is already sitting in a film it chose six weeks ago. Hanuman Ansh did not win Friday because it outspent Haiwaan on Day 1 publicity. It won Friday because those seats were already sold to a different story.
