Germany blames Russia for the Leipzig airport drone and shuts the Bonn consulate
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said a 4 August drone with 600 grams of explosive was found next to a Ukrainian Antonov cargo jet. The detonator failed. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul ordered the Russian consulate general in Bonn closed and ended the Russian House lease in Berlin.

Germany said on Tuesday, 1 September, that Russia was responsible for an attempted drone attack at Leipzig/Halle Airport on the night of 4-5 August. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt told reporters that police work, the pattern of the offence and intelligence findings together established Russian responsibility. He said the people who handled the drone were acting on behalf of Russian state agencies. Standing with him, Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul ordered the closure of Russia's consulate general in Bonn and the end of the agreement that houses the Russian House cultural centre in Berlin. The Russian ambassador was summoned. Controls on Russians entering Germany will be tightened.
The drone carried about 600 grams of explosive. It was found in a secure area of the airport, near the south runway used by cargo flights, attached to or beside the wing of a Ukrainian Antonov aircraft that flies weapons and other freight to Ukraine. The detonator was faulty. A bomb-disposal robot removed it. Investigators suspect a second drone struck a cargo aircraft nearby. A third drone was reported near the airport about ten days later.
Why Leipzig
Leipzig/Halle is a civilian airport that also moves military cargo for the German armed forces and for NATO allies. It is a base for Ukraine's Antonov Airlines, which carries most of Ukraine's air freight. A detonation on an Antonov loaded with munitions would have been a disaster on German soil. Dobrindt raised the national threat assessment from general to high. He said Germany is not at war and is a daily target of hybrid attacks. He also said the assumption must be that Germany will be targeted again.
A U.S. defense official in Europe had earlier told CNN that Washington assessed the Leipzig drone as belonging to a Russian intelligence service. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said the alliance stood in full solidarity with Germany. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said EU foreign ministers would answer later in the week, including with additional sanctions.
Moscow's reply
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said Moscow would respond to what she called Berlin's anti-Russian action, Interfax reported. Russia has denied responsibility in similar European sabotage cases and has demanded evidence. Wadephul said Leipzig was not an isolated case and fitted a wider pattern of Russian hybrid operations in Europe.
The Bonn consulate and the Berlin cultural centre are visible diplomatic assets. Closing them is a mid-level step: below an ambassadorial expulsion, above a protest note. Germany still has an embassy channel in Moscow and a Russian embassy in Berlin. Trade, energy remnants and the large Russian-speaking population in Germany all argue against a full break. The airport case argued for a public attribution after weeks of official caution.
What the investigation still owes
Dobrindt did not name the agents, the service branch or the launch point. He did not say whether anyone has been arrested in Germany. The faulty detonator is the reason Leipzig is an attribution story rather than a mass-casualty story. The next fact that matters is whether German prosecutors can put a person in a courtroom, or whether the case stays at the level of a ministerial briefing and two closed buildings.
For Ukraine the operational point is narrower. Antonov flights out of eastern Germany now carry a proven targeting risk. Cargo patterns may shift. Insurance will follow. The 600-gram charge was small by battlefield standards and large enough to rip a wing and set a munitions pallet on fire. That is the scale of the hybrid campaign Dobrindt described.
