Ganguly takes the Delhi Capitals job for IPL 2027 after two seasons outside the playoffs
Delhi Capitals named Sourav Ganguly head coach for IPL 2027 on Tuesday. He replaces Hemang Badani, whose side finished fifth in 2025 and sixth in 2026. Ganguly, 54, has been an adviser, director of cricket and, last year, head coach of Pretoria Capitals in the SA20.

Delhi Capitals named Sourav Ganguly head coach for the 2027 Indian Premier League on Tuesday, 6 October. He replaces Hemang Badani, who coached the side in 2025 and 2026 and did not take it to the playoffs in either year. The franchise finished fifth in 2025 and sixth in 2026.
Ganguly is 54. He played 113 Tests and 311 one-day internationals for India. His path into this job is not a first contact with the franchise. He joined as an adviser in 2019, was director of cricket in 2023 and 2024, and coached Pretoria Capitals, Delhi's sister side, in the 2025 SA20. That SA20 season was his first as a head coach. JSW, the group behind the franchise, had already made him director of cricket in 2024.
In a statement released with the announcement he said Delhi Capitals was a franchise very close to his heart, and one he had shared a strong relationship with over the years. He said he had worked closely with the owners, the management, the support staff and the players, which made the job an exciting responsibility. He said the group was talented and had played a good brand of cricket in the recent past, and that he was looking forward to the squad, the new season, and building a strong and fearless team.
The record he inherits
Badani's two seasons are the number the appointment has to beat. Fifth in 2025, sixth in 2026, no playoff cricket. In a ten-team league that is a mid-table finish twice, not a collapse and not a title push. The coaching change is a response to that plateau. It is also a change of type. Badani was the head coach. Ganguly arrives with a playing career, a BCCI presidency behind him, and a year of SA20 coaching at Pretoria rather than a long IPL dugout record of his own.
The Pretoria job is the closest precedent. It was a head-coach role at a sister franchise, in a different league, for one season. It is evidence that the owners have already put him in a coaching chair. It is not evidence about IPL results, because the SA20 and the IPL do not share a table. The 2027 season will be the first time his name sits on the Delhi team sheet as head coach in the Indian competition.
What the franchise has already used him for
The 2019 adviser role came before his BCCI presidency. The director of cricket brief in 2023 and 2024 covered the men's and women's sides, which means he has already sat above both squads rather than inside one dressing room. The head coach job is narrower and closer to the playing group. He will pick the daily work, the bowling plans and the match-day order in a way an adviser does not.
Cricinfo reported that Yuvraj Singh is expected to join as batting coach, and that no official announcement of that appointment has been made. Until the franchise says so, that remains an expectation, not a staff list. The confirmed name on Tuesday was Ganguly's.
The social post that carried the news used the line "Dilli, it's time for Dadagiri" and called him head coach of the Tigers. The formal line underneath was the statement quoted above. Between the slogan and the statement, the operational fact is the replacement of Badani for 2027.
Why the timing is the story
IPL 2027 is not this month. The auction, the retention rules and the overseas slots for that season are still ahead. Naming a head coach in October 2026 gives the franchise a full off-season under one voice before the squad is finalised. That is the practical gain of an early announcement. A coach named in February inherits a squad. A coach named in October can argue about who is in it.
Ganguly's own words point at the squad he already knows. He said he had worked with owners, management, staff and players. That is a claim about continuity, not about a clean slate. The results he is being asked to change are the fifth and the sixth. The means he has used before, at this franchise, were adviser and director of cricket. The means he is being given now is the head coach's chair.
The open questions for 2027
Three things are still unset. The batting-coach seat has been discussed in public and not confirmed. The retention and auction list for 2027 has not been published against this appointment. And the sixth-place finish in 2026 is the baseline, not a verdict on the players who will be there next year. A coaching change does not move a net run rate by itself. It changes who sets the practice, who speaks at the toss, and who is accountable if the side is fifth or sixth again.
The confirmed facts from Tuesday are smaller than the nickname on the post, and more useful. Sourav Ganguly is Delhi Capitals head coach for IPL 2027. Hemang Badani's two seasons ended fifth and sixth. Ganguly is 54, with 113 Tests, 311 ODIs, a 2019 adviser stint, a 2023-24 director of cricket brief, and one SA20 head-coach season at Pretoria behind him. The season he has been hired for has not started.
