Homeland Security Investigations agents searched the Washington, D.C.-area home of Representative Ilhan Omar, Democrat of Minnesota, early on Monday 12 October. The Department of Justice confirmed that investigators executed a judicially authorised search warrant secured by the department as part of an ongoing federal criminal investigation. The search took place roughly three weeks before the midterm elections on 3 November, a period in which the Justice Department has historically avoided such steps involving candidates.
Omar’s office said she had done nothing wrong and described the action as an outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponisation of federal law enforcement. Omar wrote on social media that she was ok and that the search was an attempt to target political enemies. She added that she would not be silenced. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Whip Katherine Clark and Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar called the raid deeply disturbing and said it raised serious questions about the continued use of federal government power against political adversaries.
Sources familiar with the investigation said it centres on immigration paperwork completed by Omar’s late father when she was a child. Omar, who was born in Somalia and arrived in the United States as a refugee, has denied any fraud. Vice President JD Vance and Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin have previously raised the allegations in public. A current official described the probe as multiyear and involving whistleblower complaints. A former official briefed on the matter said the investigation concerns potential false statements and immigration fraud.
The search began around 4:30 or 6 a.m. according to neighbours. One resident across the street said agents woke her with banging on doors and a large truck. Investigators were observed removing boxes from the residence. The Department of Justice statement did not detail the specific allegations or whether any items seized would support charges. Border czar Tom Homan said a judge had signed the warrant after agents presented evidence.
Omar is seeking re-election to a fourth term representing Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, which includes Minneapolis. She has been a frequent target of criticism from President Donald Trump, who has questioned her loyalty and background. Trump told reporters on Monday that Omar is a terrible person but said he was not involved in the search. The timing has drawn attention because federal guidelines generally discourage investigative actions that could affect elections so close to voting day.
No charges have been filed. Omar’s lawyers have not commented beyond the office statement. The investigation remains open, and officials have declined to say whether additional searches or interviews are planned. Democratic members of Congress have requested briefings on the warrant’s basis. Republican figures who have long accused Omar of immigration irregularities have treated the search as confirmation of their claims. The outcome will depend on whether prosecutors conclude that the evidence obtained meets the threshold for indictment.
