The governments of the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy and Canada on 21 August 2026 condemned Israel's plans to advance the E1 settlement project in the occupied West Bank.
The statement described the project as a step that would effectively break the West Bank into two non-contiguous parts and render a viable Palestinian state far more difficult to achieve. The five countries called on Israel to halt the plan.
The E1 area lies between East Jerusalem and the Ma'ale Adumim settlement. Construction there has long been regarded by European governments and the United Nations as a particularly sensitive expansion because of its geographic effect on territorial contiguity.
Israeli authorities have indicated intention to proceed with the development despite previous international objections. The joint European and Canadian statement adds to a pattern of coordinated diplomatic pressure on settlement policy.
No immediate change in Israeli plans was announced in response. The issue remains a recurring point of friction in relations between Israel and several of its traditional European partners.
