Elon Musk has contributed more than $276 million to Republican groups and his own super PAC since the start of July 2026. The total makes him the largest known donor in the current midterm cycle. His representatives provided the figures to The New York Times ahead of a federal filing deadline. A spokesperson for America PAC later confirmed the numbers.
Of the $276 million, $158 million went to the Senate Leadership Fund, the main super PAC supporting Republican Senate candidates and aligned with Majority Leader John Thune. Another $76 million went to America PAC, which Musk founded in 2024 and which is running a canvassing operation in seven Senate battlegrounds and nearly three dozen House races. The Congressional Leadership Fund, which supports House Republicans, received $20 million. Lone Star Liberty PAC, backing Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s Senate campaign, received $10 million. The Republican Governors Association received $10 million and the Republican Attorneys General Association received $2 million.
These gifts bring Musk’s known federal political giving in the 2025-26 cycle to roughly $366 million. That already exceeds the approximately $290 million he spent in the 2024 presidential cycle. In May he had said he intended to reduce future political spending. The summer donations reverse that stance.
America PAC is using the money to expand a door-knocking programme aimed at hard-to-reach Republican voters. The Senate Leadership Fund contribution is one of the largest single political donations on record and exceeds what the Democratic counterpart raised from all donors in the same quarter. The spending is concentrated on races that will decide control of Congress in the 3 November elections.
Musk’s net worth is reported at about $1 trillion, making him the first person to reach that threshold. His companies include Tesla, SpaceX, and X. He received the National Medal of Science from President Trump on 8 October. The midterm donations occur while Republicans defend majorities amid voter concerns over prices, the Iran war, and other issues.
Federal law requires super PACs to disclose large contributions. The third-quarter reports due this week will make the figures public. Musk’s team supplied the numbers early to the Times. No comparable single donor has matched the scale of the July-to-September gifts in this cycle.
The practical effect is an immediate cash advantage for Republican turnout and advertising operations in competitive districts. Whether the money changes outcomes will depend on how effectively the groups convert it into contacts with voters and on the underlying political environment. Democrats need a net gain of four Senate seats for a majority. Several of those seats are in states Trump carried in 2024. Musk’s spending is concentrated on those contests.
Earlier in the cycle Musk had given smaller amounts to the same groups and to Trump’s MAGA Inc super PAC. The summer acceleration is new. America PAC has already spent part of its funds on prior-cycle work and on a petition programme that paid registered voters. The bulk of the new money is earmarked for the final weeks before the midterms.
The disclosure ends any ambiguity about Musk’s current level of involvement. He is the largest known donor by a wide margin. The remaining question is how the recipient groups deploy the cash and whether voters respond to the resulting contact.
