Delhi Police removed Jantar Mantar from the list of designated protest sites on Monday. The decision followed recommendations from a committee set up by the Union Home Ministry. Three alternative locations were named: Ramlila Ground, Burari Ground, and CBD Ground in East Delhi. The change comes amid ongoing protests in the capital related to electoral roll revisions.
Jantar Mantar has long been the main designated site for demonstrations in central Delhi. The police notification ends that status. Organisers of protests will now need to use the new venues or obtain separate permissions. The move was announced while protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar continued in the city. More than 700 people were detained over the weekend in connection with those demonstrations.
The committee reviewed the use of the site after repeated large gatherings and traffic disruptions. Officials said the alternatives can accommodate larger crowds with less impact on central roads. No specific date was given for when the new list takes full effect. Protest groups have not yet issued a joint response. Some opposition parties had planned further marches in the area.
The Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls has drawn criticism from opposition parties, who allege irregularities. The Election Commission has defended the process. The Supreme Court has also been hearing related matters on detentions and due process. The change in protest sites does not alter the underlying legal framework for demonstrations under the Delhi Police Act. It does shift the practical locations where permission is more readily granted.
Local traders near Jantar Mantar have previously complained about prolonged occupations of the area. The new arrangement may reduce those complaints while requiring organisers to travel farther from the main government district. Further details on capacity and booking procedures for the alternative grounds have not been published.
