Polling Numbers on Election Eve
Aggregated national polls as of November 1 and 2 place Democrats ahead of Republicans by between 7.8 and 8.9 percentage points on the generic congressional ballot. A RealClearPolling average through October 30 showed 52 percent for Democrats and 43.1 percent for Republicans. An NBC News survey conducted October 28-30 found a 52-45 split. An Emerson College poll from October 24-26 showed a 10-point gap.
More than 53 million early ballots had been cast by Sunday afternoon, including roughly 30 million in-person votes, according to the University of Florida Election Lab. That total already exceeds the previous midterm record of 45.9 million set in 2022.
Senate and House Outlook
All 435 House seats and 35 Senate seats are on the ballot. A Democratic gain of roughly 18 House seats would produce a majority under current projections. In the Senate, polls show Democratic candidates ahead or within the margin in several Republican-held seats, including contests in Texas, Maine, Ohio, and Kansas. A 50-50 Senate would leave Republicans in control through the vice-presidential tie-breaker.
President Donald Trump has campaigned in Iowa and other states in the final days. Vice President JD Vance was scheduled to appear in Ohio. Trump has stated that Republicans will perform well and surprise critics. The elections will decide control of Congress for the remaining two years of his second term.
Factors Cited in the Surveys
Pollsters and analysts point to voter concerns over inflation and the cost of living, along with views of the administration's economic record, as the main drivers of the Democratic advantage in national preference. The generic ballot measures party preference rather than specific district outcomes, so the translation into seats depends on the distribution of votes across individual races.
Final results will depend on turnout on November 3 and the performance of individual candidates in competitive districts and states. The early-vote volume indicates high participation, but the composition of those votes relative to Election Day turnout remains to be measured.
